Our representative will assist you with your luggage and provide a comfortable private transfer to your carefully selected hotel in the heart of Kathmandu. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring traditional Dal Bhat and other local delicacies while meeting your fellow adventurers and discussing the journey that awaits.

Day 2: A full-day sightseeing and test drive in Kathmandu Valley

Elevation: 1,300m | Riding Distance: 50km | Accommodation: Hotel

After a hearty breakfast, embark on a comprehensive cultural tour of Kathmandu Valley's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, beginning with the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal's most important Hindu pilgrimage site, situated along the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Here, witness the daily rituals and cremation ceremonies that have taken place for centuries, gaining insight into the Hindu way of life and death. Continue to the magnificent Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, where Tibetan refugees have created a vibrant community filled with monasteries, shops, and restaurants serving authentic Tibetan cuisine. The massive mandala makes this stupa one of the most significant Buddhist sites outside Tibet. Next, visit the iconic Swayambhunath Stupa, affectionately known as the Monkey Temple, perched atop a hill overlooking Kathmandu Valley, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains while hundreds of monkeys playfully roam the ancient steps and temples.

In the afternoon, you'll be introduced to your motorcycle for the adventure ahead, where our experienced mechanics will provide a thorough briefing on the bike's features, maintenance tips, and safety protocols. Take your first test ride through Kathmandu's bustling streets, navigating through the organized chaos of traffic that includes everything from sacred cows to colorful buses, rickshaws, and countless motorcycles. This practice session is crucial for familiarizing yourself with local driving conditions, traffic patterns, and road rules, ensuring you're comfortable and confident before heading into the remote mountain regions. Our guides will accompany you throughout this orientation ride, providing valuable tips on riding techniques specific to Himalayan terrain and ensuring all safety equipment is properly fitted and functional.

Day 3: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara

Elevation: 822m | Riding Distance: 200km | Duration: 6-7 hours | Accommodation: Hotel

Begin your mountain adventure with an early morning departure from Kathmandu, riding through the bustling outskirts of the capital before entering the scenic countryside that defines Nepal's Middle Hills region. The route follows the Prithvi Highway, a winding mountain road that offers spectacular views of terraced hillsides, traditional villages, and rushing rivers. As you climb out of the Kathmandu Valley, the landscape transforms from urban sprawl to lush green hills dotted with traditional Nepali houses built in the distinctive style with red clay roofs and white-washed walls. Stop at Malekhu for a traditional riverside lunch featuring fresh fish from the Trishuli River, a local specialty that has been prepared the same way for generations.

Continue riding through charming hill stations like Mugling, where the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers converge, creating a spectacular natural junction surrounded by terraced fields and traditional villages. The road winds through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine trees, with occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks in the distance. As you approach Pokhara, the majestic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges come into view, creating a stunning backdrop for the beautiful lake city. Upon arrival in Pokhara, check into your lakeside hotel and enjoy the serene atmosphere of Phewa Lake, where you can take a peaceful boat ride to the Tal Barahi Temple situated on a small island in the middle of the lake, or simply relax on the lakeside promenade watching the reflection of the Annapurna range in the calm waters.

Day 4: Drive from Pokhara to Kalopani

Elevation: 2,530m | Riding Distance: 150km | Duration: 7-8 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse

Today marks the beginning of your high-altitude adventure as you leave the subtropical climate of Pokhara and venture into the dramatic landscapes of the Annapurna region. The route initially follows the scenic road alongside the Modi River before turning north toward Beni, a bustling market town that serves as the administrative center of the Myagdi district. The road gradually climbs through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, where you'll witness the daily life of mountain communities that have adapted their lifestyle to the challenging terrain over countless generations.

As you continue climbing, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with the road carved into steep cliff faces and crossing numerous suspension bridges over roaring mountain rivers. The vegetation changes from lush subtropical forests to temperate pine and rhododendron forests, and eventually to alpine scrubland as you gain altitude. Pass through Tatopani, famous for its natural hot springs where trekkers have been soaking their tired muscles for decades, before continuing the challenging ascent to Kalopani. The name Kalopani literally means "black water" in Nepali, referring to the dark color of the Kali Gandaki River that flows through the world's deepest gorge.

Upon reaching Kalopani, you'll be surrounded by some of the world's highest peaks, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Nilgiri, creating a natural amphitheater of snow-capped summits. The village offers basic but comfortable teahouse accommodation where you can enjoy a warm meal and rest while acclimatizing to the higher altitude. The clear mountain air and stunning 360-degree views of the Himalayas make this an unforgettable stop on your journey toward the hidden kingdom of Mustang.

Day 5: Drive Kalopani to Muktinath and Back to Kagbeni

Elevation: Muktinath 3,710m, Kagbeni 2,810m | Riding Distance: 80km | Duration: 6-7 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse

Today's ride takes you deeper into the Kali Gandaki Gorge, following the ancient salt trading route that has connected Tibet with the Indian subcontinent for over a thousand years. The dramatic landscape continues to unfold as you ride through the world's deepest gorge, with towering peaks rising nearly 6,000 meters above the riverbed on both sides. The road conditions become more challenging as you leave the main Annapurna Circuit route and head toward the sacred site of Muktinath, but the incredible scenery and cultural significance of the destination make every bump and turn worthwhile.

Muktinath holds immense religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists, with the temple complex featuring 108 sacred water spouts and an eternal flame that burns from natural gas seeping through the rocks. Hindu pilgrims believe that visiting Muktinath and bathing in the sacred waters will lead to salvation, while Buddhists revere the site as one of the 24 Tantric places mentioned in ancient texts. The temple's unique architecture reflects the harmonious coexistence of these two major religions, with Hindu and Buddhist symbols adorning the same sacred space. Spend time exploring the temple complex, observing the daily rituals performed by pilgrims who have traveled great distances to reach this holy site, and learning about the fascinating legends and beliefs associated with this mystical place.

After your spiritual experience at Muktinath, begin the descent toward Kagbeni, riding through an increasingly arid landscape that marks your entry into the rain shadow region of the Himalayas. Kagbeni, meaning "crow's beak" in the local dialect, is a medieval town that serves as the gateway to Upper Mustang, with traditional Tibetan-style architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and ancient monasteries that have stood for centuries. The town's strategic location at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers made it an important stop on the trans-Himalayan trade route, and its well-preserved medieval character provides a glimpse into the region's rich commercial and cultural history.

Day 6: Drive Kagbeni to Ghami

Elevation: 3,520m | Riding Distance: 65km | Duration: 5-6 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse

Cross the official checkpoint marking your entry into Upper Mustang, the restricted area that was closed to foreigners until 1992 and still requires special permits to visit. The landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation as you leave the relatively green Kali Gandaki valley and enter the high desert plateau that characterizes the Trans-Himalayan region. The terrain becomes increasingly Tibetan in character, with barren hills painted in shades of red, ochre, and gold, creating a moonscape-like environment that feels otherworldly and mystical. The ancient caravan route you're following has been used by traders, pilgrims, and nomads for over a millennium, connecting the Tibetan plateau with the lowlands of Nepal and India.

The challenging road conditions require careful navigation as you wind through narrow gorges, cross dried riverbeds, and climb over high passes that offer spectacular panoramic views of the Mustang landscape. Stop at traditional villages along the way, where time seems to have stood still for centuries, and observe the unique architecture featuring flat-roofed houses built from local stone and mud, designed to withstand the harsh winds and extreme temperature variations of the high-altitude desert environment. The local people, primarily of Tibetan descent, maintain their traditional lifestyle, practicing ancient Buddhist customs, speaking Tibetan dialects, and preserving cultural traditions that have been passed down through countless generations.

Ghami village is famous for its ancient monastery and the longest mani wall in Nepal, stretching for over a kilometer and containing thousands of carved stone tablets inscribed with Buddhist prayers and mantras. The village's location on a natural terrace overlooking the dramatic red cliffs creates a spectacular setting for photography and contemplation. The monastery houses ancient murals, statues, and manuscripts that provide insight into the spiritual and artistic traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, while the surrounding landscape offers countless opportunities for exploration and discovery of hidden caves, ancient ruins, and geological formations that tell the story of this remarkable region's history.

Day 7: Drive from Ghami to Lo-Manthang

Elevation: 3,840m | Riding Distance: 45km | Duration: 4-5 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse

Today's ride takes you to the ultimate destination of your Upper Mustang adventure: the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, the capital of the former Kingdom of Lo and one of the last remaining medieval walled cities in the world. The route crosses several high passes including the Tsarang La pass, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Mustang plateau, the Tibetan border ranges, and the distant peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. The landscape continues to amaze with its otherworldly beauty, featuring colorful badlands, deep canyons, and towering cliff formations that have been sculpted by wind and water over millions of years.

As you approach Lo Manthang, the excitement builds when you catch your first glimpse of the medieval city walls rising from the barren plateau like a mirage in the desert. The city, founded in 1380 by Ame Pal, has remained virtually unchanged for over 600 years, with its massive earthen walls, narrow gates, and traditional Tibetan architecture creating an authentic medieval atmosphere that transports visitors back in time. The city's strategic location on the trade route between Tibet and the Indian subcontinent made it a prosperous center of commerce, culture, and religion, and its isolation has helped preserve its unique character and traditions.

Upon entering through the main gate, you'll be struck by the narrow cobblestone streets, traditional whitewashed houses with flat roofs and colorful prayer flags, and the constant sound of prayer wheels spinning in the wind. The city is dominated by the four-story Royal Palace, which still houses the King of Mustang (though the monarchy was officially abolished in 2008, the royal family continues to hold ceremonial significance), and several ancient monasteries including Thubchen Gompa, Jampa Gompa, and Chodey Gompa, each containing priceless collections of ancient murals, sculptures, and manuscripts that represent some of the finest examples of Tibetan Buddhist art.

Day 8: Explore around Lo-Manthang

Elevation: 3,840m | Accommodation: Teahouse

Dedicate this full day to exploring the fascinating walled city of Lo Manthang and its surrounding areas, immersing yourself in the unique culture, history, and spiritual traditions that have been preserved in this remote corner of the Himalayas. Begin with a visit to the Royal Palace, a magnificent four-story structure that serves as the residence of the King of Mustang and showcases traditional Tibetan architecture with intricate woodcarvings, colorful murals, and ancient artifacts that tell the story of the kingdom's illustrious past. The palace's rooftop offers spectacular views of the city and surrounding landscape, providing an excellent vantage point for photography and contemplation.

Explore the three main monasteries within the city walls, each representing different periods of construction and artistic styles. Thubchen Gompa, built in the 15th century, houses some of the most spectacular murals in the Himalayas, with walls covered in intricate paintings depicting Buddhist deities, mandalas, and religious scenes that have been miraculously preserved despite the harsh climate and passage of time. Jampa Gompa, dedicated to the future Buddha Maitreya, contains a massive clay statue that nearly touches the ceiling of the three-story building, along with ancient manuscripts written on palm leaves and bark paper. Chodey Gompa serves as the main assembly hall for the monastic community and features beautiful architectural details including carved wooden columns, ornate ceiling decorations, and a collection of butter sculptures that are recreated annually for religious festivals.

Venture outside the city walls to explore the surrounding countryside, visiting ancient caves that served as meditation retreats for Buddhist monks, climbing to viewpoints that offer panoramic vistas of the Mustang plateau, and discovering hidden valleys where traditional farming is still practiced using ancient irrigation techniques. Interact with local residents who are eager to share their stories, traditions, and knowledge about life in this remote region, learning about their unique customs, traditional crafts, and the challenges of preserving their culture in the modern world. The afternoon can be spent visiting local artisans who continue to practice traditional crafts such as carpet weaving, thangka painting, and metalwork, providing insight into the artistic traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Day 9: Drive to Gilling

Elevation: 3,806m | Riding Distance: 40km | Duration: 4-5 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse

Leave the walled city of Lo Manthang behind and venture into even more remote territory, riding toward the village of Gilling, which offers an authentic experience of traditional rural life in Upper Mustang. The route takes you across the high plateau through a landscape that becomes increasingly dramatic and isolated, with vast expanses of barren hills, hidden valleys, and distant views of the Tibetan border ranges. The road conditions are challenging, requiring careful navigation through rocky terrain, dried riverbeds, and steep climbs that test both your riding skills and your motorcycle's capabilities.

Gilling village is perched dramatically on a hilltop, accessible only by a steep and winding trail that switchbacks up the mountainside through layers of sedimentary rock that reveal millions of years of geological history. The village represents one of the most authentic examples of traditional Mustang life, with houses built in the ancient style using local materials and techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries. The community consists of approximately 30 families who maintain a subsistence lifestyle based on barley cultivation, yak herding, and traditional crafts, living in harmony with the harsh but beautiful environment that surrounds them.

The village's ancient monastery, Gilling Gompa, houses remarkable 14th-century murals and sculptures that rival those found in more famous sites, but with the added charm of being virtually unknown to the outside world. The monastery's caretaker, often one of the village elders, will share fascinating stories about the gompa's history, the meaning of the religious artwork, and the spiritual practices that continue to be observed by the local community. Spend the evening with a local family, sharing meals prepared with traditional methods and ingredients, learning about their daily routines, and gaining insight into how people have adapted to life in one of the world's most challenging environments while maintaining their cultural identity and spiritual beliefs.

Day 10: Drive to Kagbeni

Elevation: 2,810m | Riding Distance: 70km | Duration: 5-6 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse

Begin your return journey from the remote highlands of Upper Mustang, retracing your route through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Himalayas while reflecting on the incredible experiences and memories you've gathered during your time in the hidden kingdom. The ride back to Kagbeni offers opportunities to see familiar landscapes from new perspectives, notice details you might have missed on the way up, and appreciate how the changing light and weather conditions transform the appearance of this remarkable region throughout the day.

Stop at various viewpoints along the route to capture photographs of the dramatic landscape, including the towering red cliffs, deep canyons, and distant snow-capped peaks that define the character of Upper Mustang. The geological formations you'll encounter tell the story of ancient sea beds that were lifted to their current elevation by the collision of tectonic plates, creating the unique sedimentary structures and fossil deposits that make this region a paradise for geology enthusiasts. Take time to explore some of the side valleys and hidden corners that you may have bypassed on your outward journey, discovering ancient caves, religious sites, and natural formations that add depth to your understanding of this complex and fascinating landscape.

Arrive in Kagbeni with a deeper appreciation for this gateway town and its strategic importance in the history of trans-Himalayan trade and cultural exchange. Spend the evening exploring the narrow streets and ancient buildings with fresh eyes, perhaps visiting local shops where you can purchase authentic handicrafts, textiles, and religious artifacts created by local artisans. The town's location at the confluence of rivers creates a unique microclimate that supports some vegetation, providing a welcome contrast to the barren landscapes you've been traveling through and serving as a reminder of the dramatic ecological transitions that characterize the Himalayan region.

Day 11: Drive to Tatopani

Elevation: 1,190m | Riding Distance: 90km | Duration: 6-7 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse

Today's ride takes you from the high desert environment of Upper Mustang back into the lush, green landscapes of the lower Kali Gandaki valley, providing a dramatic ecological transition that showcases the incredible diversity of Nepal's mountain regions. The descent from Kagbeni follows the ancient caravan route along the Kali Gandaki River, passing through a series of distinct climate zones that support different types of vegetation, wildlife, and agricultural practices. As you lose elevation, notice how the barren, wind-swept hills gradually give way to terraced fields, forests of pine and rhododendron, and eventually to subtropical vegetation that thrives in the warmer, more humid conditions of the lower valley.

The road conditions improve as you descend, but the route remains challenging due to its winding nature and the dramatic changes in elevation that require careful attention to engine braking and gear selection. Stop at traditional villages along the way where you can observe the agricultural practices that have sustained mountain communities for centuries, including the terraced farming systems that maximize the use of limited arable land on steep hillsides. These engineering marvels, built without modern machinery, demonstrate the ingenuity and persistence of generations of farmers who have adapted to one of the world's most challenging agricultural environments.

Arrive in Tatopani, whose name literally means "hot water" in Nepali, referring to the natural hot springs that have made this village a popular stop for trekkers and travelers for decades. The hot springs, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius, are believed to have therapeutic properties that help relieve muscle fatigue, joint pain, and other ailments associated with high altitude travel and physical exertion. Spend the evening soaking in the naturally occurring pools, allowing the mineral-rich waters to rejuvenate your body after days of challenging riding through some of the world's most demanding terrain. The relaxing atmosphere, combined with the lush green surroundings and the sound of the rushing river, provides the perfect setting for reflection on your Upper Mustang adventure and preparation for the final stages of your journey.

Day 12: Drive to Pokhara

Elevation: 822m | Riding Distance: 120km | Duration: 5-6 hours | Accommodation: Hotel

Continue your descent from the high mountains back to the subtropical valley where Pokhara sits beside its beautiful lake, surrounded by some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery. The route takes you through a series of ecological zones that demonstrate the incredible biodiversity of the Himalayan region, from the temperate forests around Tatopani to the subtropical vegetation that characterizes the lower elevations. The changing landscape provides countless opportunities for photography and observation of the complex relationships between altitude, climate, and ecosystem development that make the Himalayas one of the world's most fascinating natural laboratories.

Pass through traditional villages and market towns where you can observe the daily life of people who depend on the rivers, forests, and agricultural terraces that characterize this region. Stop at local tea shops and restaurants to sample regional specialties and interact with residents who are always curious about travelers and eager to share their knowledge about local customs, history, and traditions. The road gradually improves as you approach the more developed areas around Pokhara, but the scenery remains spectacular throughout the journey, with glimpses of snow-capped peaks appearing between the hills and valleys that define the Middle Hills region of Nepal.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, check into your lakeside hotel and take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy some of the amenities and activities that make this city a favorite destination for adventure travelers from around the world. Take a peaceful boat ride on Phewa Lake while watching the reflection of the Annapurna range in the calm waters, visit the World Peace Pagoda for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains, or explore the vibrant Lakeside area with its restaurants, shops, and cafes that cater to international visitors. For those seeking additional adventure, Pokhara offers opportunities for paragliding, zip-lining, bungee jumping, and ultralight flights that provide bird's-eye views of the spectacular landscape you've been traveling through on the ground.

Day 13: Drive to Kathmandu

Elevation: 1,300m | Riding Distance: 200km | Duration: 6-7 hours | Accommodation: Hotel

Embark on your final day of mountain riding as you make your way from Pokhara back to Kathmandu, following the familiar Prithvi Highway but experiencing it with the wisdom and confidence gained from your Upper Mustang adventure. The route offers one last opportunity to enjoy the spectacular scenery of Nepal's Middle Hills, with their terraced farmlands, traditional villages, and glimpses of the high Himalayas that have been your companions throughout this incredible journey. The road conditions and traffic patterns that seemed challenging on your outward journey will now feel manageable thanks to the riding skills and mountain experience you've developed over the past two weeks.

Take advantage of rest stops along the way to purchase souvenirs and handicrafts from local artisans, sample regional cuisine that reflects the diverse cultural influences of different ethnic groups, and capture final photographs of the landscapes that have provided the backdrop for your adventure. The return journey provides an opportunity for reflection on the experiences, challenges, and discoveries that have made your Upper Mustang motorcycle expedition an unforgettable adventure, while the familiar sights and sounds of the route create a sense of completion and achievement.

Arrive in Kathmandu in the late afternoon or early evening, returning to the bustling energy of Nepal's capital city after spending two weeks in some of the most remote and peaceful places on earth. Check into your hotel and spend the evening celebrating your successful completion of one of the world's most challenging and rewarding motorcycle adventures. Enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow adventurers and guides, sharing stories, photographs, and memories while reflecting on the incredible journey you've completed together through the hidden kingdom of Upper Mustang.

Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour – A Journey of a Lifetime!

Ratings:

I recently completed the Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour with Amigo Treks and Expedition, and honestly, I’m still trying to find the words to describe how incredible the experience was.

From the moment we kicked off the journey, everything felt smooth, well-organized, and stress-free – thanks to the amazing team at Amigo. The bikes were in great condition and handled the challenging terrain like a dream. Riding through the barren cliffs, ancient villages, and wide open Himalayan landscapes felt surreal, like we were part of something timeless.

The route itself was mind-blowing. Every day brought new views, new adventures, and genuine connections with locals. Lo Manthang was a highlight – the walled city felt like stepping into another world. Riding through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, crossing rivers, and passing ancient monasteries made the journey even more spiritual and enriching.

But what really made this trip special was the team. Our guide was more than just a guide – he became a friend. Always looking out for us, sharing stories, checking the bikes, and making sure we were safe and having fun. The support vehicle crew were absolute legends too – they had our backs every step of the way.

I’ve done a few motorcycle trips in different parts of the world, but this one with Amigo Treks and Expedition stands out by far. The mix of culture, adventure, raw beauty, and the personal touch from the team made this an unforgettable ride.

If you’re even thinking about riding to Upper Mustang, stop thinking and go. And do it with Amigo – you won’t regret it.

My friend and I recently went on a motorbike tour of Upper Mustang with Amigo Treks and Expedition, and we have to say, it was an incredible experience. From the stunning scenery to the fascinating cultural sites, it was a trip that we will never forget.

On the first day, we arrived in Kathmandu and were warmly greeted by an Amigo Treks and Expeditions representative. We were transferred to our hotel, where we had the rest of the day to explore the city on our own.

The following day, we had a full day of sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley, where we visited some of the most iconic sites in the city, including the Swayambhunath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and Boudhanath Stupa. We also had the chance to test drive our motorcycles and get familiar with them before starting the journey.

On the third day, we started our journey toward Pokhara, a city known for its stunning natural beauty. The drive was breathtaking, and we were already in awe of the scenery.

We continued our journey through the rugged terrain of the Mustang region, making our way to Kalopani on the fourth day. The views were incredible, and we couldn't believe the natural beauty that surrounded us.

One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Muktinath, a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists. After spending time there, we made our way back to Kagbeni, a town that sits at the entrance of the Mustang region.

The following day, we drove to Ghami, a small village with a rich history and cultural significance. The highlight of the trip was visiting Lo-Manthang, a fortified city that is home to some of the most fascinating cultural heritage in the region. We spent the day exploring the city and learning about its history.

We had an entire day to explore around Lo-Manthang and take in all of the sights and sounds of this incredible city. From ancient monasteries to beautiful palaces, there was no shortage of things to see and do.

After leaving Lo-Manthang, we continued our journey towards Gilling, a small town that offered a glimpse into the everyday life of the people in the region. We then made our way back to Kagbeni and eventually to Tatopani, a small village known for its natural hot springs, where we could relax and unwind after days of driving.

We then made our way back to Pokhara, where we could take in more of the city's natural beauty and soak up its relaxed atmosphere. The next day, we drove back to Kathmandu, where we had one final night to experience the city's vibrant culture and unique atmosphere.

Overall, my friend and I had an amazing experience on the Upper Mustang motorbike tour with Amigo Treks and Expedition. The itinerary was action-packed, and we got to see some of the most stunning scenery in Nepal. We highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for an adventure in this beautiful country.
