Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

   16 Days    Trip Id ( 001-A-117)

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 is one of the most sacred and inspiring journeys in the world, combining spirituality, culture, and the raw beauty of the Himalayas. Organized by Amigo Treks & Expedition, this pilgrimage takes you from the lively streets of Kathmandu, with its ancient temples and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, across the dramatic Himalayan landscapes into the mystical land of Tibet.

At the heart of the Yatra lies Mount Kailash, a peak revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers as the center of spiritual power. Pilgrims believe that even a single circumambulation of the mountain brings blessings, while Tibetan Buddhists hold that completing 108 circuits leads to enlightenment. Nearby, the serene Lake Mansarovar is believed to purify the soul and renew the spirit for all who bathe in or meditate beside its waters.

One of the highlights of the journey is the three-day Kailash Parikrama, a challenging yet deeply meaningful trek that takes you across scenic valleys, high-altitude passes, and sacred sites visited by devotees for centuries. Along the way, you’ll witness breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, vast grasslands, and tranquil monasteries that reflect Tibet’s timeless spiritual traditions.

Amigo Treks ensures a comfortable and well-supported experience with professional Nepali and Tibetan guides, carefully planned acclimatization, and full logistical arrangements. The package includes Tibet permits and visa fees, accommodation, meals, transportation, and even essential gear like a sleeping bag and down jacket for your comfort in the high-altitude climate.

With over 15 years of expertise, Amigo Treks combines safety, cultural immersion, and spiritual guidance to make this once-in-a-lifetime Yatra smooth and fulfilling. Day 05: Kathmandu to Gyirong (2800m),(155km), (6-7h)

The Gyirong-Rasuwa border closes around 3:00 PM (Nepal Time). This implies that you will have to cross the border before 3:00 PM. Depending on the flow of the people visiting Tibet, the immigration formalities might take up to 1-2 hours.

Gyirong-Rasuwa border is located roughly 130 kilometers north of Kathmandu and the drive takes about 6-7 hours. With a target to reach the border around noon time, you will start this day very early in the morning (around 5:00 AM). Carrying packed breakfast, you will leave Kathmandu to start your journey to Kailash in a jeep. It’s a very scenic drive that is sometimes along the Trisuli River and sometimes higher up in the mountain road way above the river. This drive offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks, lush forest and the southern face of the peak in the Langtang range. You will stop for a quick lunch in Dhunche before continuing on a meandering road to the border. After lunch, the drive continues to the Nepal-Tibet border. Once at the border, you will complete the necessary border formalities and get across the border to meet your English-speaking Tibetan guide, who will take care of everything, while you are in Tibet. In Gyirong, you will check into the hotel and spend the remainder of the time resting at the hotel. Overnight in a hotel in Gyirong.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 06: Acclimatization in Gyirong

The next destination, Saga, is located at an elevation of around 4600 meters. Acclimatization is necessary before heading to this elevation. Therefore, Gyirong makes an ideal place to stop for a day to acclimatize to the higher elevation to come. Surrounded by mountains and green hills covered in lush green forest, which is quite unusual for the Tibetan plateau, the town offers a number of attractions. Out of these attractions, you will visit Pakba Monastery, Jipu Village and the Meditation Cave of Master Padmasambhava.

After breakfast, you will set out on a journey to visit Drakar Taso Hermitage (Milarepa’s meditation cave), located at the altitude of 4,200 meters, roughly 40 kilometers south of Gyirong. This cave makes the best place for acclimatization hike due to its altitude. To reach the cave, it’s about a half an hour drive and 2-3 hour hike. After visiting the cave, you will drive back to the hotel and after lunch in the evening visit the Pakba Monastery, located around 30 meters east of the town of Gyirong, at an elevation of 2,850 meters. This monastery is believed to have been built by Songtsen Gampo, the King of Tibet for his wife Bhrikuti Devi, who was the princess of Nepal. The architecture of this monastery that was built about 1000 years ago, resembles the architecture of the majority of the temples in Nepal (Pagoda Style). The monastery houses the statue of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. You will then get back to the hotel for overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 07: Drive from Gyirong to Kyakyaru (Saga) (4600m), (180km), (3-4h)

Today, leaving the beautiful green town of Gyirong, you will head toward the more barren land of the Tibetan plateau, Saga, located roughly 180 kilometers from Gyirong, at the elevation of around 4600 meters. You will start the journey after breakfast. As you leave Gyirong and slowly head toward, look down below to enjoy the view of the Gyirong city located amidst the lush green valley. As you continue further on a meandering road, a picturesque waterfall greets you shortly. You can stop for sometime here to enjoy the waterfall and the view. You will then continue your journey toward Saga. As you are gradually heading beyond the treeline and toward the rain shadow area, you can notice the forest and the greenery slowly fading away. However, even without trees, the landscape composed of barren hills and green fields still look picture perfect. Soon you will enter the newly built tunnel that opens up at the other end to a placid turquoise lake, known as the Pelku Lake, which is perfectly located at the altitude of 4,591 meters above sea level. After a short break to enjoy the view of the lake, you will further continue on an endless stretch of the Tibetan plateau. A 3-4 hour drive from Gyirong will take you to the bustling town of Saga in the Shigatse Prefecture of Tibet. You will cross the bridge before entering the town of Saga. In Saga, you will check into the hotel and spend the rest of the day exploring the town of Saga or simply resting at the hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 08: Drive from Kyakyaru (Saga) to Mansarovar (4500m), (482km), (7-8h)

You will start this day after breakfast at the hotel. Saga to Mansarovar is a long drive, about 482 kilometers and the journey takes about 7-8 hours.  Leaving Saga, you will now head towards western Tibet. Majority of this day’s drive (about 470.2 kilometers) is on G219 highway that mostly  runs parallel to the western himalayas of Nepal, located roughly at the distance of about 50-60 kilometers from the highway. The remaining 11.8 kilometers forks south from the G219 Highway and continues toward the lake Mansarovar on S207 highway.

From Saga, on the way to Mansarovar, you will stop to see Yarlung Tsangpo also known as the Brahmaputra River, the 9th largest river by discharge and the 15th longest river in the world. Originating from the Kailash range of Himalayas, this river is a trans-boundary river that flows through Tibet, India and Bangladesh. After a short break the drive continues to Mansarovar. The view of the vast grasslands beneath the snow-capped peaks make the landscape picture perfect and the drive very scenic. You will also cross one of the highest mountains passes Mayum La (5,211m), before officially entering the Ngari region, where lake Mansarovar is located. Soon, the pristine lake, Mansarovar situated at the elevation of 4,600m comes into view. This oasis in the mountain desert is also inhabited by lots of birds, indigenous Tibetan hare and Tibetan wild ass, roaming and grazing the grasslands. Once in Mansarovar you will check into the hotel and set out to explore the lake area. This lake is a holy site for Buddhists, Jains, Hindus as well as people following the ancient Bon religion. On the west bank of the Mansarovar lake, lies an oval-shaped hill, atop which is built  an ancient monastery, the Jiwu Monastery that you will visit after visiting the lake. The monastery has a shrine and also a cave, where Guru Padmasambhava is believed to have meditated before leaving this world. From the monastery you can also enjoy a bird's eye view of the lake. The view is simply serene and spectacular. You will then get back to the hotel for overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 09: Mansarovar Puja and drive to Darchen (4600m), (34 km), (1h)

In the morning, if you are interested, you can perform puja and offer prayers near the lake of Mansarovar and do your meditation. After breakfast, continuing with your Kailash journey, you will drive to Darchen, located north-west of Mansarovar, in front of the sacred Mt. Kailash. This quiet and cozy town is surrounded by high peaks and the views of Mt. Gurla Mandhata, also known as Namu Nani and the western Himalayas of Nepal look breathtaking. Darchen is also the starting and the ending point of Kailash Kora. Mansarovar to Darchen is roughly 34 kilometers and the drive takes about an hour. About 11 kilometers of this drive will be on S207 Highway and the remaining on G219 Highway.

Once in Darchen, you will check into the hotel and spend the remaining day resting as well as preparing for the next day. If you want to collect any last minute stuff for the 3 days trek ahead like snacks, portable oxygen bottles, missing gears etc you can buy them here. Also, if you want to take a horse for the Kora, you have to hire them here; therefore, let the guide know about it. After preparation, have your dinner and call it an early night and take as much rest as possible to rejuvenate your body for the coming three days hike. Overnight in a hotel in Darchen.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 10: Drive from Darchen to Tarboche (15km), (30m) and hike to Diraphuk (15km)(4-5h)

Mt Kailash kora (circumambulation of Mt Kailash) begins at Yama Dwar (gateway of the God of Death) in Tarboche, which is 15 kilometers (30 minutes) drive from the city of Darchen.

Taking only what is necessary for the 3 days trek and leaving the rest of the luggage at the hotel in Darchen, you will drive to Yama Dwar, shortly after breakfast in Darchen. This spot presents a very splendid view of the south face of Mt. Kailash. You will circumambulate Mt. Kailash in the clockwise direction. However, if you go by the rule, you will first circumambulate Yama Dwar 3 times before starting the hike to Dirapuk. The distance from Yama Dwar to Diraphuk is about 15 kilometers and the journey takes about 4-5 hours. It’s a very scenic hike as you can witness beautiful views of water cascading down the wall of Mt. Kailash to meet the stream that eventually flows into Mansarovar. The trail is mostly flat except for a few sections and runs along the stream. As you hike up the mountain, the valley opens up to reveal high mountains and the blue sky on clear days. As you hike further, you reach a place where you can witness a lot of rocks riling and the prayer flags. From this spot, you can see a very alluring view of the west face of Mt. Kailash. A little more than half way along the journey, there is a teahouse, where you will stop for lunch before continuing further on a short hike up the mountain towards Diraphuk. You will cross a small bridge before finally reaching your accommodation in Diraphuk. In Diraphuk you will check into the lodge, enjoy a spectacular view of the north face of Mt. Kailash and around the afternoon visit Diraphuk monastery located at the altitude of 5,210 meters. You will then get back to the lodge for overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 11: Hike from Diraphuk to Zuthulphuk via Dolma la (5660m), (25km),(9h)

Today’s hike is the longest and the toughest of the 3 hiking days. You will hike from Diraphuk to Zuthulphuk via Dolma La Pass (5,600m), which is about 25 kilometers in distance and the journey takes about 9 hours. The first 10 kilometers from Diraphuk will take you to Dolma La pass. On the way there are two passes smaller than Dolma La pass and are marked by prayer flags. Leaving Diraphuk, as you start your journey to Dolma La pass, the hike is on a gently ascending trail. Soon, you will come across the first pass, which is located near the Diraphuk Monastery. Crossing this one, as you get higher, the trail starts to grow much steeper. Enjoying the eastern face of Mt. Kaialsh, you will hike further up to the second pass located roughly at the altitude of 5,450 meters. Look back and you will see the trail that you followed all the way up to this pass and the Diraphuk Monastery in the distance. The landscape is beautiful, surrounded by snowy mountains, rugged hills and mountain pastures. The trail further, for some time from here, ascends very gently. But as you start to make your way through the stone and boulders the trail again grows steeper. In fact a lot steeper than before. On the way you can also see many stone stacks that represent the particular wish of the stacker and are believed to bring good luck and  fortune to the stacker. Soon you will come across a big area covered with big boulders and decorated with colorful prayer flags. Making your way through these boulders, you will finally summit the Dolma La Pass. The air is very thin and the oxygen level is less than 50% of what is available at sea level. After spending some time at the pass you will then continue down to Zuthulphuk. The trail right after the pass descends steeply. On the way, in the distance you can also see a holy lake, Gauri Kunda (the lake of compassion and bliss), perched at the altitude of around 5,608 meters. The steeply descending trail gradually turns into a gentle downhill trail. Hike down the boulders and across the stream to stop at the teahouse for lunch, where you can enjoy Tibetan Tibetan delicacy. After lunch, the remaining 15 kilometers walk continues on a gradually descending  trail that runs along the river that is accompanied by the green pastureland where you can spot the yaks grazing. Enjoying the view, and walking along the river, you will finally reach the monastery located at the elevation of 4,790 meters, the Zuthulphuk monastery, 3-4 hours after leaving the lunch spot. It’s a long day, therefore, you will check into the guest house located below the monastery and take a much needed rest. Overnight in a guest house in Zuthulphuk.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 12: Hike from Zuthulphuk to Darchen (7km), (3-4h) drive to Kyakyaru (Saga), (6-7h)

Today is the final day around Kailash and you are going back to Darchen and then to Saga. The distance from Zuthulphuk to Darchen is about 7 kilometers and the hike takes about 3-4 hours. The drive from Darchen to Saga is about 6-7 hours.

You will start this day after breakfast in Zuthulphuk. Today’s walk is all on a gently descending trail that mostly runs along the river.  On days when the weather is clear you can see the view of the surrounding mountains. You are also surrounded by green pastures where you can see yaks grazing. The entire surrounding is very picturesque. Soon you will come to a teahouse that marks the end point of the trek. From here, you can either take a vehicle or choose to march all the way down to Darchen. In Darchen you will have your lunch, collect your luggage from the hotel and continue your journey to Saga. The drive from Darchen to Saga is on G219 Highway, which takes roughly 6-7 hours. Feeling accomplished, you will now check into the hotel in Saga for an overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 13: Drive from Kyakyaru (Saga) to Gyirong (2800 km), (180km), (3-4h)

Breakfast at the hotel and now leaving the beautiful town of Saga, you will drive to Gyirong. The distance is about 180 kilometers and the journey takes about 3-4 hours. Leaving the desert-like terrain of the Tibetan Plateau you will now enter the green oasis, Gyirong. You will reach there by lunch time, therefore, you will have your lunch in Gyirong. In Gyirong, you will check into the hotel and spend the remaining afternoon at leisure enjoying the greenery around. Overnight in a hotel in Gyirong.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 14: Drive from Gyirong to Kathmandu (155km),(6-7h)

It’s a long drive all the way from the town of Gyirong to your hotel in Kathmandu. Therefore, you will start early in the morning after breakfast. You will first drive to the border to complete the check out formalities. After crossing the border, you will get into the jeep waiting for your arrival and drive to Kathmandu. The vehicle will stop for lunch around Dhunche. Enjoying the beautiful landscape of Nepal you will continue your drive to Kathmandu. In Kathmandu, you will check into the hotel for overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast

From start to finish, the team at Amigo Treks ensured that our journey was comfortable, well-organized, and spiritually fulfilling.

The itinerary was thoughtfully planned, with a great balance of sightseeing, acclimatization, and preparation days before heading into Tibet. Our tours in Kathmandu Valley, Patan, and Bhaktapur were insightful and well-guided, giving us a deeper understanding of the region’s culture and history.

As we moved into the more challenging parts of the trip, especially the drive to Gyirong and beyond, the guides and drivers were professional and experienced, which made us feel safe throughout the journey. The highlight, of course, was the Mansarovar Parikrama and the trek to Dirapuk, which was a physically demanding but incredibly rewarding experience.

I just got back from an amazing trip with three of my best friends

Hi everyone, Raman here from Australia. I just got back from an amazing trip with three of my best friends, and I have to share it with you!

We decided to do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra with Amigo Treks and Expedition, and it was truly an incredible experience. From the moment we arrived in Nepal, we knew this trip would be something special.

First, we visited some of Nepal's famous temples. Muktinath, high in the mountains, was stunning with snowy peaks all around. In Kathmandu, we visited Pashupatinath - so spiritual! We also stopped at Janaki Temple in Janakpur. These visits were like a warmup for the main event.

Then, the real adventure began as we made our way to Kailash. I was a bit nervous about the Charan Sparsa part of the journey, as it's quite tough, but with the support of my friends and the amazing team from Amigo Treks, we all made it through. It felt amazing!

The Kailash Kora was even more challenging, but the views, the atmosphere, and the entire experience made it worth every step. By the end, we were exhausted but so proud of what we accomplished.

A big thanks to Amigo Treks and Expedition – they took care of everything and made the whole journey smoother. Without them, it would've been much harder.

If you're thinking about doing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, go for it! It's not easy, but it's an experience you'll never forget. Just make sure to go with a great team like Amigo Treks.

Unclimbed summit: Although a relatively modest mountain compared to the world's tallest peaks, Mount Kailash has never been climbed to its summit. It is considered an extremely sacred place, and climbing it is strictly forbidden by both religious beliefs and the Chinese government.

Geological formation: Mount Kailash is part of the Trans-Himalaya mountain range, formed by the tectonic forces that uplifted the Tibetan Plateau. The mountain itself is composed of black rock, mostly granite.

Unique shape: Mount Kailash has a distinctive symmetrical shape, with four near-perfect faces aligned with the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west). This feature adds to its mysticism and spiritual significance.

Center of the Universe: According to various religious beliefs, Mount Kailash is considered the physical embodiment of Mount Meru, which is believed to be the center of the universe. It is believed to be the dwelling place of the gods and its spiritual energy radiates throughout the cosmos.

Pilgrimage circuit: The Kailash Kora or Kailash Circumambulation is a sacred pilgrimage route that spans approximately 52 kilometers (32 miles) around Mt. Kailash. It is believed that completing a single circumambulation can erase a lifetime of sins while completing 108 circumambulations ensures enlightenment.

Mystery of the waters: Mount Kailash is the source of several major rivers in Asia, including the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali. These rivers are important to the culture and civilization of the region, and their origins at Mount Kailash add to their mystique.

Significance to various religions: Mount Kailash is revered by Hindus as the abode of Lord Shiva, by Buddhists as the abode of Demchok (an important deity), by Jains as the place where their first Tirthankara attained enlightenment, and by Bon practitioners as the sacred nine-story swastika mountain.

Magnetic field anomaly: Scientists have observed a magnetic anomaly near Mount Kailash that affects compasses and other navigational instruments. This anomaly adds to the mystery and fascination surrounding the mountain.

Restricted access: Due to its sacred status, access to Mount Kailash is restricted, and the Chinese government imposes strict regulations on visits to the area. Only a limited number of pilgrims and tourists are allowed each year, and special permits are required.

UNESCO cultural and natural site: In 2007, Mount Kailash and nearby Lake Manasarovar were jointly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was recognized for its cultural and natural significance, highlighting the mountain's importance to various religions and its exceptional landscape.

Clothing
Casual wear and comfortable walking shoes are the rules of Tibet. Be sure to bring warm clothing as nights and early mornings can be quite chilly to downright cold. Indian Pilgrims are strictly advisable to no Sari. Bring all the film, medicine, cosmetics, personal toilet items, etc. that you will need from home as these are difficult if not impossible to obtain on the way. A small first aid kit is also a good idea. Also quite useful is a route map, to know where you are going and have been each day.

What to take
Winter wear: Gore-Tex material, though expensive, is highly recommended. Down jacket, raincoat or windbreakers, thermal under wears, Jackets, warm trousers & woolen shirts (cotton will also do), warm sweaters, woolen gloves, sun hat, comfortable shoes, light leather boots in case of snow, woolen balaclava ('monkey cap') & scarf/dust mask to protect your eyes & nose from dust.

Bring with you
Snacks along the way. Chocolates, dry fruit, toffees, glucose; 'nankeen' etc. Strong water bottle & water purifying tablets. Personal medical kit and Diamox tablet (for high altitude). Sun glasses (to protect your eyes from UV, which is especially strong in high altitudes). Sun block or sunscreen lotion, wet tissues (Fresh-ones are excellent to wipe off the dust), clothes-line/clips, needle & thread, deo-spray (handy for smelly boots/feet and for a round of spray in the toilet tent!), toilet paper, torch & spare batteries, daypack (small shoulder bag), Camera & films, Binocular.

Health
This is one of the toughest high-altitude road journeys on Earth. You Must be physically fit - no two ways about that. Generally, patients with asthma & heart problems have a problem acclimatizing to high altitudes. In your interests, it is essential your doctor should examine you to know about your health condition and your ability to cope with the rigors of high altitude travel for days in 'no road' conditions, extreme cold, dust, trekking to an altitude of 19500ft during the Parikrama, etc.

Altitude Sickness
As you are traveling over high terrain, you are likely to experience symptoms and discomfort of altitude sickness (headache, loss of appetite, nausea, exhaustion, sleeplessness, breathlessness, etc.) until your body adjusts to the elevation. This can take a couple of days or more depending on the individual. For this reason alone, we have made it mandatory to stay 2 nights at Nyelam (12000ft) before moving on to the higher altitudes. Drink plenty of water, be calm, and do not exercise. Do not drink alcohol or smoke prior to and during the tour. We also recommend you carry a strip of Diamox tablets. Do consult your physician on the dosage. We provide Gamow bag (a special equipment to prevent sickness from high altitude) on this tour.
