The Makalu to Everest over 3 cols Trek connects the Makalu region with the Everest Region and takes us deep into the Himalayan valleys. Perhaps one of the most difficult trekking routes around the nation, the journey does offer unforgettable views for those who take up on the challenge. A thrilling adventure right from the get-go, we follow the hilly trail through the Makalu Barun and Sagarmatha national parks.
Mt. Everest (8848m) has been a symbol of utmost thrill and adventure for decades. Likewise, the fifth highest mountain in the world- the Mt. Makalu (8481m) is popular for off-beat trips. As such, this trek revolving around both the Everest and Makalu ranges while displaying the immaculate beauty of these regions.
Our journey begins from the capital city of Kathmandu as we head over to Tumlingtar before driving towards the trailhead at Chichila. We trek past Num and Seduwa to reach Tashi Gaon. Next, we trek over the Shipton La Pass (4170m) and Keke La Pass (4127m) which brings us to Yangri Kharka. Finally, we go past Langmale Kharka to reach the Makalu Base Camp. Here, we can enjoy the views of Mt. Makalu (8,481m), Makalu II (7,678m), and Chomo Lonzo (7,804m). Trekking past Swiss Camp, we cross the Sherpani Col Base Camp to reach the Baruntse Base Camp. Past the West Col, we reach the glacial lakes of Panch Pokhari. Trekking over the Amphu Labsta Pass (5845m), we enter into the Everest Region and reach Chhukung. Heading over to Dingboche, the trail takes through Sherpa villages like Tengboche and Monjo to reach Lukla. The trek ends with a flight to Kathmandu.
If you are trekking into the Himalayas make sure you learn about the weather conditions. While September, October, and November are ideal for trekking, most people avoid the rainy (June-August) and winter (December-February) seasons.

Day 01: Arrival Day Day 01: Arrival Day Upon your arrival in Nepal, a company representative will receive you at the Tribhuvan International Airport. A short drive from the airport will bring you to your hotel. As the scheduled activities for the day come to a close, you can explore the nearby areas for the rest of the day. Day 02: Flight Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (1 hr.) and jeep drive to Chichila (1505 m – 3hrs) The beginning of our journey and we make our way towards the hilly town of Tumlingtar. Up and over the lush green valleys the hour-long flight takes us towards the eastern Himalayas. Touching down at Tumlingtar, we take a brief rest before boarding the jeep towards the trailhead at Chichila. The journey is a pleasant one as we make our way through the lush green forests enjoying the hilly landscapes. Day 3: Trek to Num (1560m – 6 hrs.) Exiting Chichila bazaar, we begin our ascending journey heading towards the picturesque village of Num. Following the lush green forests, the hilly trail takes us past Satbaini and Hururu to reach Patighar for a brief rest. Ascending to Dauj La, we head north which then brings us to Mudhe. The final stretch of the day is a pleasant one as we follow the pleasant hilly landscapes to Num. Day 04: Trek to Seduwa (1530 m – 6 hrs.) An early start to the day awaits as we make our way out of Num and towards the hamlet of Seduwa for the night. Heading out of Num the trail descends sharply onto the terraced farmlands of Lumbang. Continuing our descending run we enter the lush green forests to reach the suspension bridge over the Arun River. Crossing the stunning river we begin the final stretch of our journey ascending towards the hamlet of Seduwa. Day 05: Trek to Tashi Gaon (2065 m – 4 hrs.) Exiting Seduwa, we make our way towards Murmidanda crossing several streams en route. Through the terraced farmlands, we continue our journey gradually ascending towards a series of Mani walls high above the Kasuwa Khola. The next stretch of the trek takes us past Narbugaon village. From here, we set off on a final ascending run towards Tashi Gaon. Day 06: Trek to Khongma (3470 m – 7 hrs.) One of the more challenging sections of the trek, today, we make our way towards Khongma Danda. This also means a steep rise in altitude which is why we begin the journey at a slow pace. Exiting Tashigaon, the trail ascends towards the yak herders’ settlement before reaching the hamlet of Sadema. Past Sadema, the route becomes steeper as we head towards Unshisa before finding the lush green forests which mark the final stretch of this journey. Descending through the pleasant hilly landscapes, we make our way towards Khongma. Day 07: Resting day at Khongma for acclimatization On the first of our rest days, today, we take some time off at Khongma making sure our bodies are well acclimatized to the increasing altitude. In addition to exploring the local village and learning more about the local culture, we make our way towards the hill summit to enjoy the sublime views of the Makalu Himalayas. The day offers a relaxing experience in addition to the beautiful views of hilly Nepal. Day 08: Trek over Shipton La pass (4170 m) and Keke La pass (4127 m) to Debate (3875 m – 7 hrs.) The first of our Himalayan passes today we cross the Shipton La Pass and Keke La Pass; both above the altitude range of 4,000m. Climbing through a ridgeline, the hilly trail takes us high above Khongma to reveal the summit of Makalu (8,481m) in the distance. Continuing our ascending run through a series of rhododendron forests, we make our way to the summit of Kauma La. Enjoying the pleasant Himalayan views, we ascend the summit of Shipton La (4170m) which boasts surreal views of Chamlang (7321m), Peak 6 (6,524m), and Peak 7 (6,758m). Heading past Kalo Pokhari, we ascend to the summit of Keke La Pass (4127m). Enjoying the views of the Himalayan, we descend over to Debate. Day 09: Trek to Yangri Kharka (3600 m – 5 hrs.) Exiting Dobate, we begin our day with a steep ascent leading to the upper ends of the valley. The lands here are mostly uninhabited and we get to enjoy the beauty of rhododendron forests. Crossing the Barun River atop a suspension bridge, we continue our journey through the quiet forested landscape. Slowly gaining altitude, we reach the yak herders settlement of Yangri Kharka. Day 10: Trek to Langmale Kharka (4410 m – 4 hrs.) Exiting Yangri Kharka, we once again begin an ascending journey towards Langmale Kharka for the night. The journey is a pleasant one but does cover a significant rise in altitude as we make our way through yak pastures and lush green forests. Past Yangri Kharka, the trail quickly climbs towards Merek which is also the final settlement in the region. Following the wilderness, while enjoying the Himalayan views, we reach our camp at Langmale Kharka. Day 11: Trek to Makalu Base Camp (4870 m – 5 hrs.) Trekking through glacial moraines, we begin our Himalayan adventure towards Makalu Base Camp located at an altitude of 4,870m. Exiting Langmale Kharka, the trail ascends towards the summer settlement of Shershon before heading towards the Base Camp. The majority of the trail is flat and takes us in the company of majestic glaciers and Himalayas. Day 12: Trek to Swiss Camp (5150m – 6 hrs.) Alongside the gigantic south face of Makalu (8,481m), we begin our ascending journey towards the Swiss Camp. Situated amongst the glacial moraines of Barun Glacier, the base camp lies directly below the west face of Makalu (8,481m). Wrapping up things at the Makalu Base Camp, we begin our ascending journey crossing the lateral moraines of Barun Glacier which involves navigating past large boulders. Day 13: Resting day at Swiss Camp for acclimatization A day off to enjoy the lovely Himalayan views while also making sure our bodies are well prepared for the next stretch of our journey. Weather permitting, we journey to a hill summit just beyond the base camp. This vantage point offers sublime views of the Kinshung face of Mt. Day 14: Trek to Sherpani Col Base Camp (5,688m – 5 hrs.) Wrapping up things at Swiss Camp, we begin to continue our journey through the rugged Himalayan trail. Up in the Himalayas, the trail is much more obscured and involves a lot of switchbacks, and depending on the weather the entire landscape can be covered by fog. The Sherpani Col Base Camp is located on the snout of the glacier 3 hours away from the Sherpani Col itself. At an altitude of 5,688m, the camp is covered with snow and offers majestic views of the majestic Himalayas all around. Day 15: Climb over Sherpani Col (6146m) to Baruntse Base Camp (6050m – 8 hrs.) One of the physically demanding days of the trek, today, we climb over the Sherpani Col and head towards the Baruntse Base Camp. Depending on the weather, we make use of ropes to navigate our way around the Himalayas. The journey is a slow ascending one as we make sure we cross over the stunning Sherpani Col. At an altitude of 6,146m, the Himalayan pass offers glorious views of the Makalu and Everest Himalayas. From here, we descend to the Baruntse Base Camp. Day 16: Climb over West Col (6143m) to Panch Pokhari (5500m – 5 hrs.) Continuing our Himalayan adventure, we make our way out of the Baruntse Base Camp heading towards the West Collocated at an altitude of 6,143m. Like Sherpani Col, the West Col connects the Eastern Himalayas to the Everest Ranges. As the majestic Himalayas cover the entire landscape we cross over the West Col heading towards Panch Pokhari deep within the Hunku Valley. Day 17: Resting day at Panch Pokhari On the final of our rest days today we take a day off at Panch Pokhari. Panch means five and Pokhari means lake which also describes the cluster of glacial lakes found in the region. Camping nearby the lakes we enjoy the scenic beauty of the pasture lands as the lush green valley in the distance makes up for a stunning backdrop. Day 18: Trek to Amphu Labsta High Camp (5527m – 6 hrs.) Exiting Panch Pokhari we begin our journey heading towards the Amphu Labsta High Camp located at an altitude of 5,527m. The Amphu Labsta pass is the highest point in between the Honku and Imja Valleys. As the stunning summit of Ama Dablam (6,856m) shines on the far west, the final stretch of our journey begins towards the High Camp. Day 19: Climb over Amphu Labsta (5845m) to Chukung (4720m – 9 hrs.) Exiting the High Camp, we make our way through the rugged Himalayan landscapes and gradually ascend to the Amphu Labsta Pass (5845m). Approaching the pass from Hinku valley, there is little snow and the boulder-sewn landscape can prove to be a strenuous climb. From the summit, the views of the Khumbu region are unparalleled as we begin our descending journey through the snowy trail. The descending journey requires the use of ropes for some regions as we descend to Chukung. Overnight at Chukung. Day 20: Trek to Dingboche (4260m – 6 hrs.) Exiting the hamlet of Chukung we begin our descending journey heading towards the hamlet of Dingboche for the journey. The journey follows the lush green forests west towards the quaint settlement of Syalko. Enjoying the views of Ama Dablam (6,856m) and Lhotse (8,516m) alongside the Everest Range, we make our way over to the summer settlement of Dingboche. Day 21: Trek to Monjo (2880m – 6 hrs.) One of the longer days of the journey today we make our way towards the hamlet of Monjo for the night. The journey is a descending one as we follow the classic EBC trail past the hamlets of Orsho and Shomare. Meeting up with the Imja River at Pangboche, we continue alongside the river bank to reach Tengboche. Here, we make a brief stop and explore the Dawa Choling Monastery. Crossing the Dudh Koshi River past Phunki Tenga, we descend to Namche. The final stretch of our trek takes us past Jorsalle which is also the exit point for Sagarmatha National Park to reach Monjo. Day 22: Trek to Lukla (2830m – 5 hrs.) The final day of our trek is a short one as we descend to the town of Lukla for the night. Exiting Monjo, the trail descends to Bengkar. Following the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, we make our way to Phakding enjoying the pleasant hilly landscapes all around. Past Ghat, the trail takes us to Chheplung before heading southeast towards Lukla. Day 23: Flight Lukla to Kathmandu (0.5 hrs.) An early start to the day as we make our way out of Lukla experiencing the thrill of its narrow airstrip. High above the majestic Himalayas, we make our way back to the capital city enjoying the natural beauty of hilly Nepal. Reaching Kathmandu, we make our way directly to the hotel wrapping up our Himalayan adventure.
