Highlights:

  • Pumdikot is a very popular hill station near Pokhara. The summit of the hill, that is at 1500 meters above sea level, has a viewpoint that offers enchanting views of the mountain panorama that includes Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Machhapuchhrea, Lamjung Himal range and Manaslu range and a very  mesmerizing views of the Pokhara Valley, World Peace Pagoda and the Phewa Lake. Pumdikot also houses the second tallest statue of Lord Shiva in Nepal. While the entire structure is 108 feet high, the statue alone is 51 feet in height. The premises also has 108 shiva lingas that encircle the statue. Moreover, apart from the views and the statue of the Lord Shiva this place also holds historic and cultural values. During ancient times, there was a temple of Bhumeshwor Mahadev on the hill, where the farmers would pray, asking for protection against hailstone and other natural disasters and their prayers were believed to have been answered. This hill was also used as a fort by the Shah Kings as a very important battlefront, when the country was divided into 24 and 22 states (before the unification of Nepal).
  • The World Peace Pagoda is another very beautiful and important Buddhist monument and a local landmark in Pokhara. Out of the approximately 80 Peace Pagodas, built around the world to promote peace and non-violence in the world, by Nipponzan-Myohoji, this is the first peace pagoda in Nepal (the second one is in Lumbini) and 71st in the world. Located at the elevation of 1100 meters from the sea level on Anadu Hill in Pokhara, the pagoda is 115 feet tall and 344 feet in diameter. This white pagoda, also known as ‘Shanti Stupa’ in Nepali language, has two tiers designed for tourists and religious visitors to circumambulate the pagoda. The second row has the display of four statues of Buddha which was presented as a souvenirs from 4 different countries: ‘Dharmacakra Mudra’ (Japan), ‘Bodh Gaya’ (Sri Lanka), ‘Kushinagar’(Thailand) and ‘Lumbini’(Nepal). These statues represent important events in the life of Buddha and are named accordingly to the place where these events took place. Apart from the peace pagoda, this location in Pokhara makes a very good site to enjoy the views of  mountain panorama, Phewa Lake and the Pokhara Valley.
  • Gupteshwor Cave, Nepal’s most famous cave, located in Chhorepatan, Pokhara, is a cave-shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. It’s a natural cave known for its religious significance and stunning limestone formations. This natural cave features impressive stalactites and stalagmites, a large waterfall and several shrines dedicated to Hindu deities (the largest one dedicated to Lord Shiva) offering visitors a fascinating blend of natural beauty and spiritual importance.
  • Devi’s Fall, also locally popular as Patale Chango, is located opposite Gupteshwor Cave in Chhhorepatan, Pokhara. Fed by the water in the Phewa Lake, this waterfall cascades down from a height of about 100 feet and flows into a deep gorge and disappears into  an underground tunnel, which creates an intriguing and dramatic scene and adds to the mystery and allure of the site. The surrounding area is picturesque, making it a popular spot for visitors to enjoy nature and take photographs .
  • The International Mountain Museum in Pokhara is the only museum in Nepal that is dedicated to the mountains of the world, particularly the Himalayas. The museum exhibits history, culture and tradition of mountaineering, as well as the diverse communities living in the mountain region. The museum also showcases the history of famous expeditions, the geology of the mountains, flora and fauna and the lives of renowned mountaineers and the equipment used by them to make history in mountaineering. Therefore, for anyone who is interested in the history and the present time of mountains, mountain life and mountaineering, this place is a must-visit site in Pokahra.
