Day 1 : Kathmandu to Gyirong (2700m), (155km), (6-7h)

With a target to cross the Nepal-Tibet border in Gyirong before 3:00pm (Nepal time), we set out on a journey to Tibet very early in the morning (around 4-5am). Located roughly 130 kilometers north of Kathmandu, it takes roughly 6-7 hours to reach the Gyirong Port (where we cross the Nepal-Tibet border) from Kathmandu.

It’s a very scenic road that offers you a view of many magnificent snow-capped peaks in Nepal from different sections of the road. The road, once you enter the Langtang National Park, grows a little rougher than the road left behind. The vehicle will stop for lunch at one of the roadside restaurants and then continue toward the port.

After border formalities, you will cross the border and enter Tibet. Your Tibetan-guide will meet you on the other side of the border and together you will drive to the town of Gyirong. It’s roughly 1 hour drive (about 25 kilometers) from the border. Once in Gyirong, you will explore the Gyirong valley and enjoy the villages, dense forest and beautiful snow-capped peaks rising above the woods. This will also provide you the required altitude acclimatization. You will get back to the hotel for overnight stay.

Day 2 : Gyirong – Tingri - Shigatse (4300m), (550 km), (11-12h)

Today you are driving from Gyirong to Shigatse, which is located roughly 550 kilometers north-east of Gyirong. It’s a long drive about 11-12 hours. After early morning breakfast, your journey starts towards Shigatse leaving the lush green, very scenic valley of Gyirong. As you head further toward Shigatse, you will see landscape changing gradually from lush green valley to dry and arid deserted region of the Tibetan Plateau. Enjoying lush green forests, breathtaking waterfall and bottomless canyons and following the winding mountain road that starts around the elevation of 4000 meters, you will first head toward the Kong Tang Lamu Pass, a mountain pass in Tibet located at 5236 meters above sea level. As you descend from the pass, soon a very spectacular turquois blue lake Peikucuo Lake (4591m) makes grand appearance and mountains make a perfect backdrop. This is one of the many high-altitude lakes that you will be driving alongside on this road trip. As you drive further a very scenic landscape with a distant view of Langtang and Shishapangma range comes into view. Yaks grazing the green pastureland adds more perfection to the beauty of the landscape. Soon you will drive past the Tingri Airport, one of the highest airports in the world and the drive continues further on a vast plain land of Tingri to a junction where the road to Everest Base Camp meets the G318 route. Enjoying a distant view of Mt. Everest, the journey continues to Shigatse. On the way you will cross yet another high mountain pass situated at an elevation of 5100 meters and driving past the highway that bifurcates to Kailash Mansarovar in Lhatse you will continue to Shigatse.
