Kyajo Ri is a remarkable peak that offers a thrilling opportunity for alpine mountaineers to advance their skills. Nestled in the Khumbu region, climbing this mountain provides a genuine taste of an alpine expedition. You'll spend up to five nights in a tented camp, trekking through a secluded valley with mixed terrain that presents a challenging yet rewarding ascent to Base Camp. Your efforts are rewarded with a breathtaking cwm of towering peaks, and the campsite is conveniently located next to a freshwater stream.
On the second day, you'll head up the valley towards a conspicuous col. Negotiating scree, rocks, and boulders over steep terrain is required to reach High Camp. At this point, you'll be treated to yet another stunning valley and a clear view of the Kyajo Ri summit.
After a well-deserved day of rest, you'll begin your final ascent to Advance High Camp. Another challenging scramble up to the final col, consisting of large rocks and scree, is required. The setting for Advance High Camp is nothing short of perfect. It's situated right next to a lake, which is typically frozen, providing magnificent glacial views, and a full sight of Kyajo Ri and the technical route to ascend this mountain.
On the day of the summit, your ascent will commence at approximately 2 am. You'll navigate around the frozen lake, marveling at the breathtaking views of the glacier as you tread in the dark with the aid of crampons. A challenging Grade 1 scramble over rocks, assisted by a head-torch, is necessary to reach the South East Col before daylight, and this is where the real climbing commences.
Equipped with crampons and a suitable single technical ice axe (suitable for Scottish Grade 2), you'll begin ascending steep snow and ice, utilizing a jumar on a line fixed by your Sherpa. You'll encounter demands climbing over a rock wall that may be iced up. This section necessitates technical climbing skills, and you'll utilize your ice axe on the rock to ascend it successfully. The route to the summit may be incredibly steep and exposed at times, ranging from 60 to 70 degrees, requiring you to front point and use your ice axe for prolonged periods. Therefore, good physical fitness and determination are essential to meet the challenges of this magnificent mountain.
Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with an incredible panoramic view of the entire Khumbu region. The descent will entail several abseils and technical down-climbing through rock and snow in icy conditions. However, you'll always be rewarded with the sweet hot tea awaiting you at camp. This is a truly exhilarating day that will leave you exhausted but incredibly content. It's an excellent challenging experience for aspiring alpine mountaineers!

This was my second time booking with Amigo and my experience was even better this time round (didn't think it was possible). From the moment I reached out to Niti (customer service agent) I was looked after. The booking process was smooth, super quick (turned it around in less than 48 hours) and provided me all the information.
On arrival in Kathmandu I was greeted by my head guide Phurba Sherpa and what a lovely greeting it was.
The expedition to climb Kayjo Ri was nothing but spectacular and with some amazing mountaineer guides. I couldn't have been more pleased with the overall experience. Safety and caring for the client (me) was always front of mind which is put my mind at easy going into an activity of this kind.
Not only have would I recommend climbing this mountain but I would highly recommend Amigo. I will certainly be back again and will be booking with them.
