Day 1: Kathmandu to Gyirong Your journey begins in Kathmandu, where you'll embark on a scenic drive to the Sino-Nepal border. This 7-8 hour drive (168 km) takes you through the breathtaking landscapes of the southern Himalayas. As you approach the border, you'll be greeted by towering snow-capped mountains and vast forests that seem to touch the sky. Upon reaching the Gyirong Port, you'll cross into Tibet, where our experienced Tibetan guide will warmly welcome you. A short 1-hour drive will take you to Gyirong Town, where you'll settle in for the night.
Day 2: Gyirong Acclimatization Day Today is dedicated to acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude of 2,800 meters. After breakfast, you'll explore the picturesque Sherpa villages around Gyirong. These serene villages, surrounded by dense forests and snow-capped peaks, offer a unique glimpse into the local culture. In the afternoon, you'll visit the Paba Monastery in the heart of Gyirong Town. Following that, a short drive will take you to Jipu Village, where you'll hike to the Meditation Cave of Master Padmasambhava.
Day 3: Gyirong to Saga After a hearty breakfast, you'll depart Gyirong and make your way to the Ngari Plateau, a vast, high-altitude region of Tibet. The 250 km journey to Saga offers stunning views of the Himalayan and Gangdise mountain ranges. Along the way, you'll be treated to views of Mt. Shishapangma (8,027m), the 14th highest peak in the world, and the serene Lake Peiku Tso. Keep an eye out for Tibetan wildlife, including wild donkeys and antelopes, as you approach Saga County.
Day 4: Saga to Lake Manasarovar Today, you'll travel through the Saga Valley, nestled between the Himalayan and Gangdise mountain ranges. The route is dotted with stunning landscapes, including vast grasslands, snow-capped peaks, and serene lakes. After breakfast, you'll embark on the journey to the sacred Lake Manasarovar. En route, you'll pass by the stunning Gongzhucuo Lake and cross the Mayum La Pass (5,211m), marking your entry into the Ngari region. As you near your destination, you'll catch your first glimpse of Mount Kailash in the distance, with Lake Manasarovar shimmering below.
Day 5: Lake Manasarovar to Darchen This morning, you have the opportunity to perform a ritual puja by the shores of Lake Manasarovar, a spiritual experience that many pilgrims cherish. Afterward, you'll continue your journey to Darchen, a small town at the base of Mount Kailash. Darchen serves as the starting point for the Mount Kailash Kora (circumambulation). Take the rest of the day to rest and prepare for the challenging trek ahead.
Day 6: Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery (13 km Trek) Your first day of trekking around Mount Kailash begins today. After breakfast, you'll take an eco-bus from Darchen to Sarshung Valley, where the trek officially starts. The trek leads you through a valley at the base of Mount Kailash, offering spectacular views of the mountain's southern, southwestern, and western slopes. After reaching the western slope, you'll arrive at Dirapuk Monastery, where you'll spend the night. In the evening, explore the ancient Dirapuk Monastery, capture breathtaking photos of the stupas, and, if weather permits, witness the sunset over Mount Kailash.
Day 7: Dirapuk Monastery to Zutulpuk Monastery (24 km Trek) Today marks the most challenging day of your Kailash Kora. The trek begins early, with a steep 4-kilometer ascent to 5,430 meters, offering a magnificent sunrise view over Mount Kailash's northwest slope. Next, you'll continue to Dolma La Pass (5,630m), the highest point of the trek, where prayer flags flutter in the wind. Be cautious as the path can be icy and rocky, even in summer. From Dolma La Pass, you'll descend to the emerald-green Lake of Compassion (Guri Kund), believed to cleanse a lifetime of sins. Finally, you'll reach Zutulpuk Monastery, nestled in a serene valley beneath the southeast foot of Mount Kailash.
Day 8: Zutulpuk Monastery to Darchen and Drive to Saga (12 km Trek) On the final day of your trek, you'll complete the Kailash Kora by trekking back to Darchen. After a successful trek, you'll drive back to Saga, retracing your route through the Ngari Plateau and the Himalayas. Along the way, enjoy the stunning landscapes of grassy pastures and serene lakes, soaking in the beauty of the region one last time.
Day 9: Saga to Gyirong Today, you'll journey back to Gyirong Valley, a hidden gem on the Sino-Nepal border. As the altitude decreases, you'll notice the landscape transitioning from snow-capped mountains and wastelands to lush forests and canyons. In the afternoon, explore the Gyirong Valley, famously described by British explorer Howard-Bury as the most beautiful valley in the world. Visit the Sherpa villages and take in the breathtaking views of snow peaks above the dense forests.
Day 10: Gyirong Border to Kathmandu It's time to say farewell to Tibet and return to Nepal. After breakfast, you'll be escorted to the Nepal border, where our Nepali staff will warmly welcome you and ensure a safe transfer back to your hotel in Kathmandu. Your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu ends here, leaving you with unforgettable memories of a lifetime.
