Everest Base Camp Trek in November: Weather, Route & Tips

everest trek

On this page

November is a good month for the Everest Base Camp trek if you enjoy clear mountain mornings and don’t mind cold nights. The monsoon has usually passed, and the air is often clearer than in the wetter months. You may get some lovely views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest along the way. The trade-off is that the higher you walk, the more important your warm clothing and sleeping bag become.

We often suggest autumn to people considering their first Everest trek, but that doesn’t make November an easy month. The long climb into Namche is still long; the rocks around Gorakshep are still uneven; and a sunrise visit to Kala Patthar can be bitterly cold. We would choose a comfortable trekking pace and proper acclimatization over trying to complete the route in fewer days.

In brief: November is one of the better months for Everest Base Camp mountain views. Expect often dry, clear post-monsoon conditions, increasingly cold mornings and nights, and busy sections of the trail, especially early in the month. The classic EBC route reaches about 5,364m, while Kala Patthar is about 5,550m. November is still part of the autumn trekking season, not an empty shoulder-season trail.

Why November Is Worth Considering

What makes November attractive is the combination of clear-sky opportunities and a well-established trekking season. Nepal Tourism Board notes that the clearest skies are often found after the monsoon in October and November. The view is never guaranteed on a given day, but those seasonal conditions give you a reasonable chance of seeing the high peaks when the clouds lift.

November also has a different feel from the wetter summer months. Lower trails are often drier and walking through Namche and the upper valleys can be particularly pleasant in sunshine. The days are shorter than in spring, though, and once the sun disappears behind the mountains, temperatures can fall quickly. We advise planning each day so that you reach the next lodge with daylight to spare.

If you are deciding between the two main autumn months, see our Everest Base Camp in October guide. October is often a little milder, whereas November usually demands more attention to cold-weather gear, especially later in the month.

What Is the Weather Like in the Everest Region in November?

There is no one November temperature for the entire Everest trek. Lukla is at roughly 2,840m, Namche Bazaar at 3,440m, Dingboche at 4,410m and Gorakshep at 5,164m. The weather at each stop is different, even on the same afternoon. The old idea of giving a single “Everest temperature” is not very useful when you are deciding what to wear.

Near Base Camp, there is a scientific weather station at 5,315m. A peer-reviewed Everest weather-station study published in October 2026 reports a mean annual temperature of about −3.1°C at that station during its 2019–2022 observation period. That is a multi-year average, not a November forecast or a typical daytime temperature. It does, however, illustrate why sunny walking weather lower down should not be confused with conditions near Base Camp.

Overnight area or viewpointApprox. elevationWhat November means on the trail
Phakding2,610mOften comfortable for daytime walking, with cool mornings and evenings
Namche Bazaar3,440mSun can feel warm; evenings and shaded streets become cold
Deboche3,820mCooler conditions and a need for warm lodge clothing
Dingboche4,410mExposed terrain, colder nights and more noticeable wind
Lobuche4,910mHigh-altitude cold; keep a warm jacket and gloves accessible
Gorakshep5,164mBasic lodges and freezing nights are possible
Everest Base Camp5,364mUsually a daytime stop; rugged, exposed ground and variable wind
Kala PattharAbout 5,550mOften visited early for views; cold and wind can make the climb demanding

We recommend checking the latest local forecast before you fly to Lukla rather than shopping based on an internet table that promises a specific temperature every November. The Everest Base Camp weather guide compares all seasons, and Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology provides official weather information.

Early November or Late November?

Early November

Early November is still a busy part of the main autumn trekking season. You may share the route with several groups, and popular accommodation can fill quickly. Nights at higher elevations are cold, but lower valleys are generally less wintry than they become later in the month. If you want to travel around a festival or need a particular type of room, discuss your dates well in advance.

Late November

Later in November, shorter days and colder early mornings become more noticeable. The trail may gradually become quieter as winter approaches, although this varies with the year and location. It is sensible to prepare for icy patches or light snowfall, without assuming that the whole route will be covered in snow. Ask your guide whether traction is necessary for the conditions on the days you walk.

Neither period guarantees clear weather or a flight on the scheduled morning. For most trekkers, the better departure is the one that allows enough time for acclimatization and a little flexibility before the international flight home.

The 15-Day Everest Base Camp Itinerary We Recommend

Amigo’s standard 15-day Everest Base Camp trek includes Kathmandu and the Ramechhap flight arrangements used during peak seasons. The two acclimatization stops are in Namche and Dingboche. The published itinerary visits Everest Base Camp on Day 10 and Kala Patthar on Day 11.

DayRouteNotes
1Arrival in KathmanduAirport pickup and hotel check-in
2Trek preparation; drive to RamechhapNormally around 4–5 hours in the published itinerary during peak operations
3Fly to Lukla; walk to Phakding (2,610m)About 8km, approximately 4 hours
4Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)About 10km, approximately 7–8 hours
5Acclimatization day in NamcheStay at the same overnight elevation
6Namche to Deboche (3,820m)About 12km, approximately 7–8 hours
7Deboche to Dingboche (4,410m)About 11km, approximately 5–6 hours
8Acclimatization day in DingbocheA second night before going higher
9Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910m)About 8.5km, approximately 5 hours
10Gorakshep; Everest Base Camp (5,364m); return to GorakshepAbout 10km, approximately 7–8 hours
11Kala Patthar (~5,550m); descend to PhericheAbout 11km, approximately 7–8 hours
12Pheriche to Namche BazaarAbout 18km, approximately 7–8 hours
13Namche to LuklaAbout 18km, approximately 6 hours
14Fly Lukla–Ramechhap; drive to KathmanduSubject to the operating flight and weather
15DepartureInternational flight arrangements

Daily distances and walking times are estimates. A cold morning, uneven trail or the group’s walking pace may change the day. Your guide should assess conditions and how people are acclimatizing. The route can be adapted when necessary rather than treating the published schedule as more important than the people walking it.

Lukla Flights in November: Plan for Ramechhap

November is not a month when we would assume a direct Kathmandu–Lukla flight. During peak trekking operations, regular flights are often routed through Manthali Airport in Ramechhap. That means a road transfer, and sometimes a night in Ramechhap, before the short flight to Lukla. Amigo’s current standard itinerary includes these arrangements, but the actual departure airport should be confirmed for your dates.

Clear weather in Kathmandu does not mean the Lukla runway has suitable flying conditions. Low cloud, visibility or wind can delay or cancel flights, and helicopter services are subject to their own operating limits too. Allowing extra time before your international flight can save a great deal of stress. For background, read our Kathmandu to Lukla flight guide.

What Should You Pack for an EBC Trek in November?

By November, our emphasis is on staying comfortable during the coldest part of the day, not buying a new wardrobe. You will still want light, breathable clothing for uphill walking, but the insulated jacket should be ready when you stop. A waterproof shell is important even if the forecast looks dry.

  • Walking clothes: quick-drying shirts, trekking trousers and a fleece or other mid-layer.
  • Thermals: top and bottom layers for cold nights and early-morning starts.
  • Insulation: a substantial down or synthetic jacket; check fit and condition if renting.
  • Weather protection: waterproof and wind-resistant jacket and trousers.
  • Hands and head: insulated gloves or mittens, light gloves, warm hat and sun hat.
  • Boots and socks: well-fitting, broken-in boots with good grip and spare dry hiking socks.
  • Sleep: a sleeping bag selected using its actual comfort rating, not simply the label “four season.”
  • Daypack: headlamp, water, medication, sunglasses, sunscreen, spare layer and documents.
  • Optional for conditions: trekking poles and guide-recommended traction if ice is present.

Amigo’s standard trip includes a 70L duffel, and rental of a four-season down jacket and sleeping bag if required. That does not mean every rented sleeping bag will suit every traveler in late November—confirm its rating before you depart. The Everest Base Camp packing list has recommended quantities, bag sizes and practical packing advice.

How Difficult Is the Everest Base Camp Trek in November?

The route does not require technical mountaineering skills in normal conditions, but it is a challenging high-altitude trek. Several days involve five to eight hours of walking, and the days from Lobuche to Base Camp and on to Kala Patthar are particularly tiring because they are above 5,000m. Cold weather may make breaks or early departures less comfortable.

A few weeks of regular walks are better than doing nothing, but if you are new to hiking we suggest allowing a proper training period. Work on hills, stair climbing and consecutive long walks, with some practice walking downhill. Our Everest trekking training guide offers a simple 12-week plan. You can also read our difficulty guide for the harder days.

Good fitness does not prevent altitude sickness. Acclimatization remains necessary in November, even if the sky is clear and the trail feels comfortable. The CDC’s altitude-travel guidance recommends gradual gains in sleeping elevation and additional acclimatization nights, while noting that a standard Everest trek can be too fast for some people. Tell your guide if you develop new headache, nausea or unusual fatigue after ascent. Do not ascend to sleep higher with suspected altitude illness; serious or worsening symptoms call for prompt medical assessment and descent.

Festivals in November: What Can Travelers Experience?

Nepal’s Tihar festival falls in October or November depending on the lunar calendar. For 2026, Bhai Tika is listed for 10 November on timeanddate.com. Homes and streets in Kathmandu may be decorated with lights during the festival period. There can also be changes in transport demand or operating hours, so it helps to arrange transfers ahead of time. Festival dates should be checked again for your specific travel year.

People sometimes plan the EBC trek hoping to see Mani Rimdu at Tengboche Monastery. It follows a Tibetan lunar calendar and may fall in October or November; it should not be assumed to be in November every year. Several operators list the 2026 Tengboche public ceremonies around 26–28 October, while some online calendars disagree. Ask the Amigo team to confirm with local monastery organizers if attending the festival is a priority for you.

Whether or not a festival coincides with your trek, you will pass through Sherpa communities with active monasteries and local traditions. Please treat visits as visits to living places of worship, ask before taking photographs and respect any ceremony restrictions.

Will a November Everest Base Camp Trek Cost More?

November is a popular trekking month, and booking late can restrict your accommodation or flight options. We recommend comparing the complete package rather than a very low headline price. Does it include the Ramechhap transfer, Lukla flights, permits, trekking meals, a guide, porter support and suitable accommodation? What happens if your flight is delayed?

Amigo’s current standard 15-day trip starts from US$1,450 per person for qualifying larger groups, but your final price depends on group size and selected arrangements. Travel insurance, international flights and personal spending are separate. The Everest Base Camp trek cost guide explains the published group rates and additional expenses without mixing them into the package price.

A Few Things to Check Before You Book

  • Choose an itinerary with time to acclimatize in Namche and Dingboche.
  • Confirm whether your Lukla flight operates through Kathmandu or Ramechhap.
  • Prepare for cold nights at Lobuche and Gorakshep, even if the lower trail forecast looks pleasant.
  • Check the rental sleeping bag’s comfort rating and try on the down jacket before departure.
  • Allow extra travel flexibility if possible, particularly before your international return flight.
  • Arrange insurance covering trekking at your planned highest altitude and medically necessary evacuation. Read our EBC insurance guide for the questions to ask.
  • If Tihar or Mani Rimdu matters to your holiday, verify that year’s dates rather than relying on the month name alone.

Everest Base Camp in November: Frequently Asked Questions

Is November a good time for Everest Base Camp?

Yes. November is a popular autumn trekking month, often offering clearer post-monsoon skies. The main trade-off is the cold, particularly at higher overnight stops and on early-morning hikes.

Is Everest Base Camp very cold in November?

It can be, especially around Lobuche, Gorakshep and Kala Patthar. Lower villages may feel comfortable in sunshine, but freezing nights and cold winds are possible higher up. Use layers and a suitable sleeping bag.

Does it snow on the EBC trail in November?

Snow is possible, particularly toward late November and at higher elevations. It is not reliable to say the trail will always be dry or always snow-covered. Your guide should assess current route conditions.

Is early November better than late November?

Early November often retains more of the busy autumn atmosphere and slightly less severe cold. Late November tends toward winter and may be quieter, but cold and shorter days require more care.

Is November less crowded than December and January?

Generally no. November is still part of Nepal’s busy autumn trekking season; December and January are usually quieter but colder. Crowding varies by date and village.

Can beginners complete the EBC trek in November?

Some well-prepared beginners can complete the standard trek. Fitness, pacing, an acclimatization-focused itinerary and an appropriate response to altitude symptoms matter more than previous climbing experience.

How long should I allow for the trek?

Amigo’s standard Everest Base Camp itinerary is 15 days including Kathmandu and flight logistics. It puts Everest Base Camp on Day 10 and Kala Patthar on Day 11.

Are Lukla flights available in November?

Scheduled flights normally operate subject to suitable weather and airport conditions, with peak-season services often departing Manthali/Ramechhap. Check the confirmed airport and flight for your specific trip.

Should I bring a down jacket in November?

Yes. A substantial insulating jacket is important at colder higher villages and for early starts. Amigo’s standard package includes rental of a down jacket if required.

Do I need crampons or microspikes in November?

Technical climbing equipment is not routinely required on the classic EBC route. Microspikes may be appropriate if icy conditions develop, but follow your guide’s advice rather than buying them automatically.

Can I see Everest clearly from Base Camp?

Everest’s summit is not clearly visible from the Base Camp area because of intervening terrain. Kala Patthar is usually the better nearby viewpoint when skies are clear.

Does November weather eliminate altitude sickness risk?

No. Altitude illness is related to elevation and individual acclimatization, not whether the skies are sunny. Follow a gradual itinerary, report symptoms early and be prepared to descend.

Does Tihar always take place in November?

No. Nepal’s Tihar festival moves between October and November. In 2026 Bhai Tika is listed for 10 November, but travelers should check the specific year’s official calendar.

Does Mani Rimdu take place at Tengboche in November?

It can fall in October or November because its dates follow the Tibetan lunar calendar. For 2026 several operators list late October. Confirm monastery dates before planning to attend.

Is it possible to return by helicopter in November?

Amigo offers a separate helicopter-return Everest Base Camp itinerary, but departures depend on aircraft availability, pilot decisions, weather, weight and operating rules. A helicopter is not guaranteed to solve a flight delay.

Our Advice for November Departures

November is a very good choice if you are coming to Nepal for mountain views and are prepared for a colder trek. We would not sell it as an easy month or promise sunshine every day. What matters more is choosing sensible dates, packing properly and giving yourself enough time to walk and acclimatize.

Take a look at Amigo’s classic 15-day Everest Base Camp trek to compare the daily itinerary and inclusions. If you would like to spend more comfortably in Kathmandu and at the available higher-standard lodges, you can also explore our luxury Everest Base Camp option. The walking and altitude still need to be taken seriously on either itinerary.
