The Everest region of Nepal , locally known as Khumbu, offers far more than one route to Everest Base Camp. Depending on your time, fitness and preferred level of comfort, you can follow the classic trail to Everest Base Camp, combine it with the turquoise lakes of Gokyo, cross the high passes of Cho La and Renjo La, or take on the complete Everest Three Passes circuit. Most journeys begin with the approach to Lukla before following the Dudh Koshi Valley through villages such as Phakding and Namche Bazaar. Higher up, the landscape changes from pine and rhododendron forest to open alpine valleys, glaciers and rugged high-altitude terrain. Along the way, trekkers pass Sherpa settlements and Buddhist monasteries, including Tengboche, while surrounded by peaks such as Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Pumori. For first-time visitors, the Everest Base Camp Trek remains the classic choice. It reaches Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 m and normally includes a climb to Kala Patthar for a clearer view of Mount Everest. Trekkers wanting a quieter extension canβ¦

FAQs
For most first-time trekkers, the classic Everest Base Camp Trek is the best starting point because it follows the main Khumbu trail and allows time for acclimatization.
If you have more time and want quieter scenery, consider Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Pass. Experienced trekkers looking for a longer and more demanding journey can choose the Everest Three Passes Trek.
Travelers with limited time can also consider one of our shorter Everest itineraries or a trek with a helicopter return.
It depends on the route. Our Everest-region itineraries currently range from approximately 9 to 24 days.
A longer itinerary does not simply mean more sightseeing. Extra days are often used for acclimatization, side trips or routes through Gokyo and the high passes. We recommend choosing the itinerary based on altitude gain and walking schedule rather than trying to complete the trek in the fewest possible days.
March to May and October to November are the main trekking seasons in the Everest region.
Spring generally brings warmer temperatures and flowering rhododendrons at lower elevations. Autumn is popular for clearer mountain views and relatively stable weather.
Winter trekking is also possible, but temperatures become much colder at higher elevations. Snow can affect high passes such as Cho La, Kongma La and Renjo La.
Difficulty varies considerably.
The classic Everest Base Camp route is a high-altitude trek with long walking days but does not normally require technical climbing. Routes involving Cho La or the Three Passes are more demanding because they involve higher passes, longer days and rougher terrain.
Altitude is usually a bigger challenge than distance. A sensible itinerary, acclimatization days and a steady walking pace are important even for physically fit travelers.
No, although flying to Lukla is the most common way to begin the trek.
Road access toward the lower Everest region has improved, making it possible to approach the trail without taking the traditional flight to Lukla. These routes require additional travel and trekking time but can be useful for travelers who prefer to avoid the flight or want a longer approach to Khumbu.
We can compare the Lukla flight and road-access options when planning your trip.
For the standard Khumbu trekking routes, travelers generally need the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Trek Card/entry permit.
Permit requirements and fees can change, so we confirm the applicable permits again before each departure and arrange or assist with them according to the itinerary.
Yes. We offer Everest itineraries where part of the return journey is completed by helicopter.
A helicopter return can shorten the trip and avoid retracing several days of the same walking route. Flights in the Everest region remain dependent on weather, visibility, aircraft performance, weight and operational conditions, so helicopter movements cannot be treated in the same way as a guaranteed road transfer.
Yes. One of the most rewarding longer routes combines Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, Cho La Pass and Gokyo Lakes.
It provides a more varied experience than simply walking to Base Camp and returning along the same trail. However, crossing Cho La adds difficulty and the pass can be affected by snow and weather, so this route is better suited to trekkers who have enough time and are comfortable with demanding mountain terrain.
