Day-by-day route outline

14Days outlined

Review the route day by day, or expand all days to compare the details.

  1. Day 1

    Drive from Kathmandu to Phaplu

    Day details

Leave Kathmandu by road for Phaplu, the overland gateway to the lower Everest region. The journey passes through hill settlements and winding mountain roads. Expect a long travel day with stops along the way. Road conditions and traffic determine the schedule, so keep the day flexible. Overnight in the Phaplu area before continuing toward Surke.

  2. Day 2

Travel to Surke and trek to Phakding

    Day details

Continue by road toward Surke, where the walking section begins. Meet the trail team and follow the path through lower Khumbu settlements toward Phakding. Road access and the starting point may vary with local conditions; your guide will coordinate the day's transport and walk. Settle into a local lodge in Phakding.

  3. Day 3

Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar

    Day details

Follow the Dudh Koshi valley from Phakding, crossing suspension bridges and passing small settlements on the way to Namche Bazaar. The final climb is a sustained uphill walk, so keep a steady pace and take breaks with your guide. Overnight in Namche Bazaar. Allow approximately five to six hours on the trail.

  4. Day 4

    Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar

    Day details

Spend a second night in Namche Bazaar to allow time to adjust before heading higher. Your guide will plan a suitable acclimatization walk, with time to explore the town and enjoy the mountain setting. Keep the day unhurried and return to Namche for the night.

  5. Day 5

Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

    Day details

Leave Namche Bazaar and follow the hillside trail toward Tengboche, with views of Ama Dablam and the surrounding peaks when skies are clear. The route includes a descent to the river and a climb to Tengboche. Explore the village and its monastery surroundings, then settle into your lodge. Allow approximately five to six hours of walking.

  6. Day 6

    Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche

    Day details

Descend through Deboche and continue across the Imja River before climbing toward Dingboche. The landscape becomes more open as you travel above the forest into the upper valley. Walk at a comfortable pace and enjoy the changing mountain views. Overnight in Dingboche, after approximately five to six hours on the trail.

  7. Day 7

    Acclimatization in Dingboche

    Day details

Stay a second night in Dingboche before continuing to higher elevations. Take a gradual acclimatization walk with your guide, adjusting the distance and pace to the group's condition, then return to the village to rest. This day provides time to adapt; speak to your guide if you feel unwell.

  8. Day 8

    Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche

    Day details

Continue from Dingboche toward Lobuche through increasingly rocky, open terrain. Climb past Thokla and the memorial area before joining the upper Khumbu valley. The altitude makes a steady pace important, even on gentler sections. Overnight in Lobuche. Allow approximately five to six hours of walking.

  9. Day 9

Trek to Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp

    Day details

Walk from Lobuche to Gorak Shep along the rocky upper Khumbu valley. After a break, continue to Everest Base Camp beside the Khumbu Glacier, then return to Gorak Shep for the night. Expect a long, demanding day over uneven terrain, with approximately seven to eight hours of walking. Your guide will adjust the plan to conditions and the group's pace.

  10. Day 10

Hike to Kala Patthar and descend to Pheriche

    Day details

Start early for the climb to Kala Patthar, a viewpoint above Gorak Shep with broad views of Everest and nearby peaks when conditions are clear. Return to Gorak Shep before beginning the descent toward Pheriche. This is another demanding day, with approximately seven to eight hours of walking. Overnight in Pheriche.

  11. Day 11

Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar

    Day details

Leave Pheriche and descend through the Khumbu valley, following the return trail toward Namche Bazaar. The day includes both downhill sections and further climbs as you pass familiar villages and mountain scenery. Take regular breaks during this long walking day. Overnight in Namche Bazaar; allow approximately seven to eight hours.

  12. Day 12

Trek from Namche Bazaar to Phakding

    Day details

Descend from Namche Bazaar into the Dudh Koshi valley and retrace the trail to Phakding. Cross suspension bridges and pass familiar villages, taking the downhill sections at a comfortable pace. Overnight at a local lodge in Phakding before continuing toward the roadhead.

  13. Day 13

    Trek from Phakding to Surke

    Day details

Leave Phakding and follow the lower Khumbu trails toward Surke. Walk through villages and cultivated hillsides as you complete the trekking section of the journey. Meet the road transport team and confirm the onward arrangements with your guide. Overnight in the Surke area, subject to road access and local conditions.

  14. Day 14

Return by road to Kathmandu via Phaplu

    Day details

Return to Kathmandu by road via Phaplu. Expect a long journey on winding roads, with stops along the way. We had a wonderful trek with Amigo Treks to Everest Base Camp. Our guide, Kishor was a total superhero and truly the fifth member of our trekking team. He negotiated a myriad of challenges to bring us the trip of a lifetime that we were hoping for. I wouldn't hesitate to travel with Amigo again and I would always seek him out. Such a lovely, family man with a cheery smile and a reassuring knowledge of altitude sickness and its effects. Manesh, our porter was fabulous too. Smiley, hard working and really keen to help out and learn. We all fell in love with Nepal, Kishor and Manesh.
