What past weather tells us
Planning a trek through Lukla? These charts count days when VFR was recorded for airplane flights, or visibility met the helicopter minimum. Each day counts once, however many reports were sent. They can help put your travel dates in context, while the latest weather decides each flight.
Lukla archive: 28 August 2022–2 October 2026. Historical reports, not a live forecast.
Airplane conditions through the year
Select a month to see its days. A day qualifies when at least one report meets the condition. For airplanes, closures and visibility below 5 km override VFR. Percentages describe days, not the chance of a flight operating.
- Qualifying VFR at least once
- Other categories / closed
- Category unknown / no report
Share of days with at least one qualifying VFR report
January
72% of 124 days had at least one qualifying VFR report.
89 days had qualifying VFR. 12 had other categories or closed conditions only. 23 had no usable category or no report.
9 of the qualifying days also had another flight category or closed conditions. Conditions were mixed; a qualifying day does not mean the whole day was open.
1,497 calendar days covered from 28 August 2022 to 2 October 2026. 1,043 had qualifying VFR recorded at least once. 29 days had no Lukla report and stay unknown. A qualifying report does not mean conditions stayed suitable all day.
Daily flight windows
See how long qualifying VFR was recorded each day. Daily windows start no earlier than 6:00 am Nepal time. These are estimated weather windows from timed reports, rather than confirmed airport opening hours.

How the opening labels work
- Limited time open: less than 2 hours.
- Partially open: 2–3 hours, including exactly 2 and 3 hours.
- Decent flight window: over 3 hours through 4 hours.
- Good flight window: more than 4 hours.
- Crystal clear: every available report that day explicitly mentions VFR, with no fixed-wing/all-operations closure or visibility below 5 km. This label takes precedence over duration; a single VFR report still leaves the duration unknown.
We add intervals between consecutive qualifying observations, at minute precision, counting only time from 06:00 Nepal time onward. A window that crosses 06:00 is clipped at that time; a later first report is not extended back to 06:00. Unknown or unsuitable timed observations break a window. “AD/ADM closed for all ops” counts as below 1,500 m and breaks both airplane and helicopter windows. Visibility below 5 km or a fixed-wing closure breaks the airplane window; exactly 5 km does not. We do not extend it before the first observation or after the last, and untimed reports cannot add hours. Conditions between observations can change, so these are estimates from the archive, not flight-operation logs.
What this means for your flight
Airplane flights come first: a tower report mentioning VFR usually indicates open conditions for fixed-wing aircraft, unless the same report gives visibility below 5 km or says the aerodrome is closed for fixed-wing aircraft or all operations. When no closure rule applies and the flight category is missing, airplane status stays unknown; good visibility alone does not establish VFR.
For our helicopter visibility rule, 1,500 m or more meets the minimum. Below 1,500 m, helicopter flights are also closed. We also treat “AD/ADM closed for all ops” as below 1,500 m, without inferring an exact distance. Good visibility is only part of the decision: the pilot and operator still need to check the route and confirm the flight.

Source: Lukla Weather Update archive, containing 5,474 text posts. The archive contains 4,523 unique reports that identify Lukla. Repeated copies of the same report are removed before counting days. The charts cover every calendar day in the archive range, including days without reports.
Each Nepal day counts once per month, or once within each time range. One qualifying report is enough; mixed days are included among qualifying days and flagged in the detail. The airplane chart uses explicit VFR mentions, excluding reports with visibility below 5 km or a fixed-wing/all-operations closure. Visibility of exactly 5 km does not close the airplane window. Numeric visibility alone does not infer VFR. The archive was decoded automatically and has not had individual staff review. Missing values and “NIL” stay unknown unless the report explicitly says closed for all operations. That statement counts as below 1,500 m and interrupts both flight windows; no numeric distance is invented. Months use the original Nepal posting date. Time-of-day comparisons use a reported observation time, never a substituted posting time. 870 untimed reports contribute to daily totals but not time ranges; 661 reports before 06:00 and 2 from 18:00 are outside the displayed ranges. The time chart starts at 06:00 Nepal time.
Reporting frequency varies. These percentages describe calendar days with at least one qualifying report, not hours an airport was open, completed flights or a forecast. The 1,500 m threshold is our visibility rule, rather than a statement of all aviation requirements.
Our visibility rule keeps this comparison consistent. CAAN’s published visual flight rules include conditional helicopter exceptions. The operator and pilot determine the requirements for a particular flight.
