Upper Mustang Helicopter Tour 2026/27: Cost, Permits and Lo Manthang

Helicopter tour

On this page

The Upper Mustang landscape looks different from the rest of Nepal. Beyond the snowy Himalayas, you find deep canyons, desert-colored cliffs, centuries-old Buddhist monasteries and the walled settlement of Lo Manthang. An Upper Mustang helicopter tour can give you a remarkable view of this remote region or, where a permitted landing is available, an opportunity for a short cultural visit.

We arrange customized Nepal helicopter journeys at Amigo Treks & Expedition, based in Kathmandu. An Upper Mustang tour needs more preparation than choosing an aircraft: the operator must assess the flight route, fuel stops, high-altitude performance, local permissions and restricted-area entry. A scenic overflight and a proper visit to Lo Manthang are not the same booking.

Quick answer (October 2026): Upper Mustang’s restricted-area fee for foreign visitors is now US$50 per person per day, replacing the former US$500 minimum for the first 10 days. Nepal also removed the previous two-person minimum for restricted-area permits in March 2026, though agency and guiding requirements remain. A helicopter charter from Kathmandu or Pokhara needs a current written price and confirmation of the actual landing location. The historical US$6,000 and US$4,000 quotes in the 2023 article should not be treated as current fares.

Why Visit Lo Manthang?

Upper Mustang lies in the Himalayan rain shadow. The mountains shelter part of the valley from heavy monsoon moisture, leaving a high desert of broad plateaus, colorful cliffs and settlements with strong Tibetan cultural connections. Lo Manthang was the capital of the former Kingdom of Lo, and its earthen walls still frame a compact historical settlement. The town’s monastery traditions and local Loba communities deserve a thoughtful visit, rather than a hurried photo stop.

The old article incorrectly described the city wall as a 6.4-kilometre enclosure. UNESCO’s tentative-list record for the Medieval Earthen Walled City of Lo Manthang instead describes a compact 15th-century settlement with a high earthen wall, palace and monasteries including Jampa Lhakhang and Thubchen. Lo Manthang is on UNESCO’s Tentative List, not an inscribed World Heritage Site. For historical context see the Nepal Tourism Board’s Mustang overview.

Visitors who wish to explore monasteries, speak with local residents or walk through the old town should ask for a guided, properly timed cultural arrangement. A helicopter landing does not automatically mean you can visit the palace or see every monastery. The permitted landing site, road transfer and opening arrangements make a real difference.

Helicopter used for sightseeing flights in Nepal

Upper Mustang Helicopter Tour From Kathmandu

Kathmandu departures usually require more flight time and aircraft positioning than starting at Pokhara. Some routes use Pokhara or Jomsom as an operational stop before going farther north. Whether an aircraft can continue to a suitable landing point near Lo Manthang depends on the licensed operator, weather, fuel and passenger load. Do not assume a nonstop Kathmandu–Lo Manthang flight.

Our original 2023 article quoted US$6,000 for the Kathmandu helicopter, plus a US$500 permit per person. Neither number is an appropriate current booking offer. The permit framework has changed, and the aircraft price requires a fresh charter quotation. A realistic quote needs to state whether the price covers the complete round trip, any fuel or positioning sectors, airport taxes, a local guide and restricted-area access.

Upper Mustang Helicopter Tour From Pokhara

Pokhara offers a shorter approach to Mustang. The helicopter may follow the Kali Gandaki corridor toward Jomsom, but wind can be strong and visibility may vary between Pokhara, the valley and a high plateau landing site. A pilot may need to alter the route or return without reaching Upper Mustang. Jomsom is a possible stop, not a mandatory or guaranteed connection.

The older US$4,000 Pokhara charter figure is unverified for 2026/27. Ask for a dated quote that distinguishes a scenic helicopter overflight from a landing and cultural visit. If your main goal is time walking around Lo Manthang, our Upper Mustang Jeep Tour may offer a more fulfilling and flexible itinerary.

Example Helicopter Route and Day Plan

StageIllustrative sequence
Hotel pickupPrivate transfer and check-in at Kathmandu or Pokhara
Helicopter flightScenic departure toward Mustang on a route selected by the pilot
Positioning/fuel stopPokhara or Jomsom if required by the operator
Upper Mustang sectorOverflight or authorized landing, depending on the service booked
Optional cultural visitLocal guide and onward transfer if the permitted landing site is away from Lo Manthang
Return flightReturn to the agreed airport with weather and fuel arrangements
Hotel drop-offTransfer from the airport after the flight

This is not a fixed published departure or a guaranteed same-day Lo Manthang landing. You should not count on spending an afternoon exploring monasteries unless that ground time is included and realistic. Ask the team for the actual flight sectors, approximate time on the ground, planned guide services, and the alternatives if a flight stops at Jomsom or is cancelled.

Upper Mustang Permit Cost in 2026/27

The largest change since the original article is the restricted-area permit. The Department of Immigration’s current fee table states US$50 per person per day for the specified Upper Mustang restricted municipalities. The previous rule charged a minimum of US$500 for the first 10 days, even for a shorter stay. That is no longer the fee structure shown in Immigration’s current table. Some older government webpages still show the old price; confirm the latest permit approval with the issuing authority.

Nepal also relaxed its restricted-area permit rules in March 2026, removing the previous two-foreign-visitor minimum. An individual foreign visitor can apply through the necessary registered-agency process with applicable guide arrangements. This is about permit eligibility, not a promise that a single person can buy a cheap shared helicopter seat or travel without a guide when one is required.

A helicopter overflight and a landing that allows visitors to physically enter the restricted zone are not identical for immigration or aviation purposes. The exact permit duration, nationality and entry documentation should be confirmed with the authorized agency and officials before payment. Do not assume that a one-day USD 50 permit alone automatically authorizes a Lo Manthang landing. For background, read Amigo’s Upper Mustang daily permit fee update.

Annapurna Conservation Area Fees

Upper Mustang is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area. Nepal Tourism Board’s current protected-area fee table lists NPR 3,000 for foreign visitors outside SAARC, NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals and a Nepali entry category shown as NPR 100, subject to its exemptions and any later changes. These conservation-area charges are separate from the restricted-area permit and from helicopter landing authorization.

Ask for the actual conservation, immigration and local aircraft charges to be itemized. A trip with only an overflight should not be given an automatic ground-entry fee without checking the specific legal requirements, and a ground landing should not be marketed as exempt simply because it is a short visit.

Current Helicopter Price: Shared Seat vs Private Charter

A private helicopter booking is generally priced according to the aircraft and agreed sectors, not simply per head. Flying from Kathmandu may cost more than departing from Pokhara because of flight time and positioning. The operator also needs accurate passenger and baggage weights: an aircraft with four or five passenger seats is not automatically able to lift that many people at a high-altitude stop.

  • Ask whether the quotation is for an entire aircraft or one shared seat, and whether it includes return flights.
  • Confirm departure city, positioning, Jomsom or Pokhara refueling and any extra shuttle sectors.
  • List each required restricted-area permit, conservation fee and landing charge.
  • Clarify whether a Lo Manthang guide, local vehicle, monastery admission and meals are included.
  • Request the operator’s written conditions for postponement, a different landing, cancellation and refunds.

Amigo does not currently have a verified standalone Upper Mustang helicopter charter rate in its published trip catalog. We therefore will not advertise the historical Kathmandu US$6,000 or Pokhara US$4,000 numbers as fresh rates or divide them into invented per-person prices. The team can provide an actual quote when you share your dates and party details.

Can Helicopters Land at Lo Manthang?

Landing depends on a suitable, authorized site and the pilot’s assessment. Lo Manthang is a living historic settlement rather than a general-purpose tourist helipad. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal oversees relevant charter and non-scheduled flight activities. Applicable local, conservation and restricted-area conditions must also be satisfied, so a permit to enter Mustang should never be confused with flight or landing approval.

An operator may offer an overflight, land at another approved point and use ground transport, or cancel when weather or aircraft-performance limits make a landing unsafe. Ask for a written description of the actual landing location. A photograph showing a helicopter above Lo Manthang does not prove an aircraft can land beside the palace on your departure date.

Altitude, Winds and Safety

Lo Manthang sits at roughly 3,800–3,850m. Rapid arrival by helicopter means passengers have not gained altitude gradually. A short visit may be easier to organize than a multi-day trek, but thin air, cold weather and physical exertion at the site can still affect some people. The CDC Yellow Book notes that physical fitness does not prevent altitude illness; tell the crew about symptoms such as headache with nausea, marked dizziness or unusual breathlessness.

Travelers with relevant heart or lung problems, mobility challenges or other significant medical issues should obtain individualized advice. Ask which licensed operator will fly, what assistance is available during boarding and how emergencies are handled. A helicopter’s emergency oxygen is not a reason to ignore symptoms or extend a visit when a passenger feels unwell.

Best Time for an Upper Mustang Helicopter Tour

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) are generally good starting windows for arranging a Mustang visit. Upper Mustang lies in a rain-shadow area, so it can remain relatively dry during Nepal’s monsoon. But the helicopter may still have to fly from cloudier Kathmandu or Pokhara into windy Kali Gandaki conditions. A dry destination does not guarantee a flyable route.

Jomsom’s afternoon winds are a real planning factor, and winter may bring snowfall and very low temperatures. Allow flexibility for weather delays; avoid a non-refundable international departure immediately after a proposed charter.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Warm layers and a windproof outer jacket for the high plateau, even if the departure airport is warm.
  • Closed walking shoes, a warm hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Passport or other documentation requested for permits and flight check-in.
  • Camera or charged phone, essential medicine and a small daypack within the confirmed baggage limit.
  • Respectful clothing and a prepared guide arrangement if visiting Lo Manthang monasteries.
  • Passenger and luggage weights provided accurately to the helicopter company.

Should You Choose a Helicopter, Jeep, Trek or Motorbike?

A helicopter visit is the best fit for someone who values aerial scenery and a limited travel window, assuming the flight can be arranged. For a deeper visit to Lo Manthang and its monasteries, the Upper Mustang Trek or Upper Mustang Jeep Tour provides more cultural time. Experienced riders can compare the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, while our Upper Mustang travel guide explains the villages and landscape in more detail.

Amigo also lists a Mustang and Everest by Helicopter with Shinta Mani itinerary for travelers seeking a premium multi-day experience. That product’s price should not be confused with a standalone one-day Upper Mustang charter; the services and travel duration are completely different.

Upper Mustang Helicopter Tour FAQs

Can you fly to Upper Mustang from Kathmandu?

Yes, a private charter enquiry can be made. The operator must confirm the route, any Pokhara or Jomsom stop, and the actual approved landing point.

Can you book a helicopter to Upper Mustang from Pokhara?

Pokhara is a practical departure city, but flights still depend on the helicopter operator, air conditions and confirmed landing arrangements.

How much does an Upper Mustang helicopter tour cost?

There is no current verified standalone Amigo charter price. The old USD 6,000 and 4,000 examples should not be used without a new written quote.

Is the Upper Mustang permit still US$500?

No. The current Department of Immigration rate is US$50 per person per day for foreign visitors to the restricted area.

Can a solo foreign traveler obtain the restricted-area permit?

Yes, the previous minimum of two foreign applicants was removed in March 2026, subject to required agency, guide and safety rules.

Does the same permit apply to a helicopter overflight?

Do not assume the same requirements. Overflying and physically entering a restricted area are different; check the specific itinerary with the authorities and operator.

Is an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit required?

Relevant conservation area fees may apply to ground entry. Check the current nationality-specific fee and your exact route.

Can the helicopter land inside Lo Manthang?

A landing must use a permitted, suitable site. It is not appropriate to assume that the walled town or palace grounds can serve as a tourist helipad.

How high is Lo Manthang?

The town is approximately 3,800–3,850 meters above sea level, depending on the reference point.

How many passengers can travel together?

The licensed operator sets the safe number based on aircraft type, fuel, temperature, wind, passenger weights and landing elevation.

Will I see the monasteries on a helicopter day tour?

Only if ground time, a guide, permits, any local transfers and opening conditions have been arranged in advance.

Is Lo Manthang a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

It is currently listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List, not as an inscribed World Heritage Site.

What month is best for helicopter sightseeing in Upper Mustang?

Spring and autumn are commonly suitable planning periods, but wind, cloud and other flight limitations can affect any month.

Is this suitable for people who cannot trek?

An aerial visit avoids trekking, but boarding, any ground visit and rapid high-altitude exposure should be assessed according to individual needs.

What if the operator cancels the helicopter?

Request written rescheduling, alternative landing and refund terms before payment. The pilot’s weather and safety decision is final.

Is Kathmandu or Pokhara better for an Upper Mustang helicopter charter?

Pokhara is closer to Mustang and may require less flight time, but the best choice depends on your itinerary and the operator’s aircraft positioning.
