Pumori (7,161 m) stands above the upper Khumbu Valley, west of Mount Everest. Its elegant pyramidal shape is familiar from the Kala Patthar viewpoint, but the climb is far more serious than the trekking route below. This guide covers the southeast face and ridge, high camps, technical skills, the Everest comparison and cost considerations for an Amigo Pumori expedition.
Where is Pumori, and how do climbers approach it?
Pumori lies near the head of the Everest trekking corridor. Expeditions usually approach via Lukla, Namche Bazaar and the upper Khumbu, taking acclimatization stops along the way. Compared with some remote Himalayan peaks, access to the wider valley is familiar and well established. That is an approach advantage, not evidence that the climbing route is easy or safe.
Base Camp and higher camps are selected for the operating season. The exact location, condition of the glacier and any high-camp modifications need to be discussed with the team leader before departure.
Southeast face and ridge climbing
A commonly used line climbs the southeast face and ridge. A team may encounter crevassed glacier approaches, steep snow-and-ice sections, fixed-rope travel and exposed upper terrain. Camp placements are not permanent landmarks. New snow, warmer conditions or changing ice can force a different climbing strategy from the previous year.
Ask where steep sections lie, who installs or checks fixed ropes, whether summit day requires difficult descent, and what thresholds trigger a turnaround. The fact that Pumori is about 7,100 m does not remove avalanche, serac or altitude hazards.
Is Pumori good preparation for Everest?
Pumori can develop relevant experience in multi-day high camps, technical climbing, glacier travel, fixed ropes and movement above 7,000 m. But a successful ascent does not automatically qualify someone for Everest. An expedition leader must assess how the climb was completed, the climber’s technical ability, altitude response, judgment and fitness.
Trekkers who have visited Everest Base Camp or Kala Patthar will already recognize the landscape, but hiking experience is not a substitute for technical mountaineering.
Training and equipment
Training should combine repeated uphill days with a pack, efficient rope transitions, crampon technique, controlled rappelling and familiarity with living in cold expedition tents. Climbers need equipment appropriate for mixed snow-and-ice terrain. Ask for a current gear checklist and a guide review rather than copying equipment lists from unrelated trekking peaks.
Pumori expedition cost and government royalty
Amigo lists a 37-day Pumori expedition from US$18,990 per person. Under Nepal’s mountaineering royalty schedule, the 7,001–7,500 m class carries a US$800 spring royalty per foreign climber, effective September 2025. That government fee is just one part of the package cost.
Confirm which transport, trekking accommodation, Base Camp supplies, high-camp food and tents, guide support, fixed ropes, oxygen where applicable, communication systems and emergency coverage are included. Compare line by line with the Amigo Pumori expedition itinerary and inclusions.
Safety and summit-window decisions
A 37-day itinerary is a planning framework, not a promise of summit conditions. The leader should monitor the stability of the climbing route, forecast winds and snowfall, and each member’s acclimatization. Good planning includes a descent strategy and an agreement that members may have to turn around even after substantial effort.
Frequently asked questions
Can Pumori be climbed as a side trip during an Everest Base Camp trek? No. It is a separate technical expedition requiring permits, trained personnel and proper equipment.
How tall is Pumori? It is commonly listed at 7,161 m.
Is a summit guaranteed with an experienced guide? No. Conditions and individual safety determine whether an attempt can proceed.
